in the back right you'll see a little back roung thing with vacuum hoses coming off of it.
it has something to do with emissions and it clicks until the jeep is warm. You can touch it and feel it click.
Note: inside the sun

I'll give that a try. It has only started this recently, could that thing be going out, or is this par for the course?

Dunno, mine has always made that noise until it reaches temp. My jeep is @ 85k miles and I've had it since 50k.

Well, I just checked it out. It is definitely not that little black thing. I could feel it clicking, but it was not matching the loud noise I recorded, not the same tempo. And when the noise went away, I could still feel the black thing clicking.
I did get out my breaker bar and listened to the engine. I could hear a definite tapping coming from the #4 injector mount, the place where it attaches to the intake manifold. I couldn't get a definite noise from the valve cover.
I wouldn't think this could be an injector making that loud of noise, so I'm thinking it is valve tap, but it still comes and goes. The valve tap I've heard on past engines stayed. Any ideas forum?

Does the click tempo change with engine speed?

I have this same noise. It only will do it on cold starts. I have used my mechanic stethescope and could not pinpoint it. Definitely sounds like a bad lifter to me.
When mine ticks really loud, the engine actually misfires slightly.
I have run diffrent oils, and different additives that are meant to clean gummed lifters, with no success.
I actually have made a thread asking this question several times, and all the posts are like mine- they don't have the answer. I am a mechanic by trade, but I just don't get it. All the lifter noises I have ever heard are consistent. This one comes and goes, which made me think of preignition. Pulled all the plugs, and they were perfect. I replaced them anyways. I will probobly pull the valve cover and check the rockers, but I'm on vacation right now.
I guess i'm one step closer to a new Stroker motor, hehe.

I guess my concern is that I still have the powertrain warranty. Is this something I should go in for and pay the 100 deductible?

I would absolutely go in. I'm looking to buy a comp cam extreme 4x4 kit and change out a few oil seals while im in it. Just for the kit and gaskets (head, exhaust, intake) and head bolts I'm looking at around $400.

Well I just took my valve cover off mine and it looks perfect. I think I'm going to take off the intake and exhaust manifolds next. The noise you have described and recorded sounds exactly like the one I'm having.

Sounds like valve noise to me. IF it is a lifter slow to prime, it will slowly get better as it runs. Usually they are just collapsed, it is uncommon to have one slow to prime, as it has to be clogged on the pressure side of the lifter. If its mechanical in the valve train it will sometimes become more evident as it runs and warms up. I don't have any theory for this, but have had a couple act like this.
I would suspect your lifter is collapsed and you have the resulting extra backlash. I recently worked on a 03 rubicon and it had a flat cam lobe, acted similar to a slightly collapsed lifter. Of course it was a 4.0, but same principal.

Okay, I'm gonna just throw this out there... any chance it's an exhaust leak? That's what it sounds like to me...

You said the sound goes away... when does it stop? Once the engine is up to temp? As the metal heats up it'll expand and sometimes small exhaust leaks will dissapate at operating temperature...
