let's punch my 42RLE in the THROAT!

Hey guys!

Here's the deal, I was driving today and the check engine light threw a code: P0700 I know it's a generic code but it isn't showing any other specific codes at the moment. However, when the light came on i felt the tranny downshift a little harder than usual. It doesn't do this every time just on occasion. Therefore, with the light throwing a tranny code and feeling the difference in shifting I am thinking it could be the TCM. Any thoughts?

04 TJ X 4.0 4speed auto. 42RLE

As usual, Thanks guys!!

Pretty sure p0700 isnt a trany code. And the 42rle is a clunky trans sometimes. It was probaby just the torque converter locking/unlocking

You are correct! Sorry about the confusion. I checked again and aparently it is an ETAX code? I know it still has to do with the PCM/TCM. I'm not to worried as you sid it's probably the torque converter. but I'd still like to get this code resolved.

Take the positive cable off the battery for 30 seconds to a minute to clear it. If it comes back within a day. Get it looked at

P0700 is a general fault in the transmission. In the meantime, you can make sure your fluid level is good and clean and then disconnect the battery to reset it and see if the code comes back. Best would be to get a scan tool to further diagnose.

On a side note, I think the 42RLE is a big POS and I sometimes dream of a stick shift swap. [/SoapBox]

I have read here on the forum about what seems like a general unease with the 42rle. I have one and don't think it's a POS. Seems like it operates as designed.

Yeah, i don't really have an issue with it. I just turn the OD off in the city and it drives like any other auto I've driven.

Everyone is correct in saying P0700 is a generic transmission code. All that code bsaically does is tell you the transmission has a problem. You will need a code reader that can read transmission codes to get the exact code.

My OD goes off the moment I drive about 40, I'm seriously considering hooking an Arduino micro controller to the jeep to do this for me, but then again I'm a huge nerd.

All the problems of this tranny have been well documented on this forum. If you have a 42RLE you need to install a quality transmission fluid cooler and install lower gears than you would with a similar transmission. You can't expect it to drive well with 33s and 3.73 gearing.

Funny you should say this. Mine drives OKAY on 33s and 3.73s but my 33s are really a big 32 inch tire since they are BFGs.
