Legality of Removing the 3rd Brake Light

I've been looking all over the internet, but don't want to go & speak to an actual cop about this.

I have an 2 door & I absolutely hate the way it looks with the third brake light on top of the spare.

Is it illegal in terms of modification/safety?

I live in Wisconsin, USA

Thanks everyone

It may not look cool enough for some but the way I look at it, it gives the multitudes of inattentive/drunk/impaired drivers just that much more help in noticing I have come to a stop. I care more about that than looks. It's legal to run without one here in California but I'm not sure about Wisconsin since it's a state-by-state thing. The feds only require it be on the vehicle when sold to its first retail buyer.

Because you're in a box that's sometimes topless and doorless, why wouldn't you want to have as much visibility as possible?

Greetings from the other Ripon btw...

Each state has their own laws for it, not all require the 3rd brake light. The feds don't care after it has been sold to the first retail buyer. That said, I prefer running with the 3rd brake light whether it's required by any particular state's law or not.

There are actually plenty of threads on here about mounting a third brake light in the centre hole of the mounted spare tyre. I don't mind it where it is from the factory, but l must admit the light in the centre of the wheel looks good too.

It's legal to run without one in Florida.

Right. I did for a long time. But, it's hard to argue with the ounce of prevention way of thinking.

Lost mine when I lost the stock carrier 4 years ago. It's not even on the long list of crap to fix.

Mine has not worked in a decade or so. I'm not getting 12V to either pin and since i'm electric stupid I left it alone.

I recently bought an AEV third brake light. Well AEV said that this light would work with a TJ, but the plug was different for my '06, so I did some wire splicing and made it work. I'm thrilled to have that ugly stock third brake light gone!!

I first made sure that the AEV light worked with my wheels, as I figured it would.
