Learned a lesson the HARD WAY regarding backspacing

I have a 2006 Rubicon with a 4" Lift.

When I bought it the jeep had 33x15.5x16 Mickey Thompsons. They were too wide and had lots of bump steer.

I bought some factory rims and put 31x10.5x15 BFG's on the jeep. These looked ridiculous and caused it to be too unstable.

Using the 30 day buy back from Discount Tire, I got 33x12.50x15 Duratracs on the factory rims. Looked great and drove great.

Today after re-installing my new bumper and winch and new winch cable, I headed down the driveway when all of a sudden there was a loud woosh and the left rear hit the ground.

Get out, and the left rear is flat. Jacked it up and pulled the tire.

Due to not enough backspacing the tire rubbed on the top of the coil housing ?? and rubbed a groove in the tire. Pulled the right one and it was almost the same.

I am a lucky man because if that had happened at 70MPH I might not be here anymore.

Took the two tires to discount and they replaced them at no charge due to being 2 weeks old, and said that the tech should have caught that. Ended up buying MB Chaos 15" rims to get the offset I need and stop the rubbing.

Maybe I should buy a lottery ticket?

33x12.5's + too little backspacing = spring perch induced tire failure. Glad you didn't have a wreck.

I like the new wheels. I am glad discount replaced those tires for you. I have always found their prices to be a little higher than other places but i have heard that they are good at standing behind their products.

Tdaz250 03-06-2011 12:14 AM

Wow, I was just thinking about throwing some 33's on mine. And being that your from neck of the woods (originally Corpus), glad to see you're ok. What back spacing did you go with? I want 33X12.50XR15's. Anyways, nice rig.

Glad you at ok and that every thing worked out for you

Wow, damn that sucks. The metal looks like it got nice an polished though! You might want to spray it before it starts to rust though!

You want 3.75-4.5" backspacing. The 4.5" will stick out less.I always run 3.75" backspaced wheels with 12.5" wide tires.

4-1/2 may even be too little for 12.5's. Go for 3.75 so you don't have rubbing issues at full steering lock or when at full axle flex.

From way back with CJs we always tried to stay narrow. I found some used rims and tires, they are way outset IDK the inches. They looked silly to me when I first mounted them up. After the recent mods first flexxing out the Jeep I realized how nice it was at full droop to have the extra width, the tire tucked in perfect and kept better footing. Plus the steering etc. advantages.

what does the stock rubicon rims have, 4.5?

Woodenya 03-31-2011 09:06 AM

No, 5 or 5.5.....
