I Checked my control arm bushes and they all look fine to me. I did try to move them sidewards, nothin happened. Do i have to get the wheels of the ground be4 i try to chk for control arm bushes? Also, this morning when i check my drive shaft for play i found that it really really turn a lot. Lot of play. Could this be the reason for the clunk of knock when i engage the gears?

Just replace the rear driveshaft U-joints, and you should be good to go.

I've had a similar problem when my transmission mount was bad. When I would initially put the tranny under load (taking off from a dead stop) it would make a rapid knocking sound that increased depending on how hard I mashed the pedal. The transmission mount can deteriorate over time and separate into two pieces. May not be your problem but it's something to check out.

I agree with geiman, check your tranny mount too.
