When I bought my 2005 Wrangler LJ they only gave me one key. The top is gray with a plymouth logo on it. When I told the Stealership how much is it to get a spare key copied they told me $180.00 and I was like $180.00 for a key, and they told me yeah, we have to do a chip program with it ? Now I don't have an alarm system so what do they mean about a chip, could I just go to a Home Depot or Ace Hardware and have them copy me a key for under $5.00 dollars.

The key has a chip in it, and the Jeep will not start without that chip.

For $180.00 dollars I can buy a steering stabilizer, 1.75 coil spacers, and Hi-lift jack and a full tank of gas. LOL!

Yeah. It's a "transponder key" or something like that. I recently made more keys for my TJ, but thankfully do not have transponder keys, so was able to get cheap replacements.

Do a search for "Transponder Key", and you'll get plenty of hits.

If you had 2 keys it would be alot cheaper to get one made.
The computer has to have two keys to program additional spares.
I have the original 2 keys locked in the safe just so they dont get lost.
Gray transponder keys run about 20-30 bucks on eBay.

Not that I recommend it necessarily, but a friend of mine was in the same situations. His solution was to remove shroud around the steering wheels and hide his original key inside it as near the ignition switch as possible. It's close enough for the sensor to read the signal and allows you to use non sensor equipped key blanks.
Of course it also eliminates the security of the system in the first place.

Just for peace of mind you can get a "clone" made at ace hardware and some wall marts for about 70$. It will not be second key but it will work.

Or if your TJ is cool like mine, it drives without a key in it. I was driving one day, and it was a little bumpy and the key fell out and it didn't turn off the engine at all. Makes me think there might not be anything to this sentry system. I have yet to try and start it with a non-chipped key though.

They want $180 because it's Plymouth key. Plymouth keys that work in Jeeps are very hard to get.

don't think they had the sentry system in 99's.
anyway, the check is only done in the first few seconds after start up.

The PO only gave me one transponder key when I bought my Jeep. I bought a couple of blanks on eBay for $15 for the pair. I had to go to the dealership for something else and they ended up cutting and programming both keys for me for about $40.
As someone mentioned above, you can also go to an Ace Hardware and have them "clone" your key for you. It will be a lot cheaper than the dealership. I don't know if the blanks I bought off eBay were capable of being made into clones or not.
There's a difference between the dealership "programming" your keys and the hardware store cloning them. Your Jeep is capable of having 5 different key codes attached to it. In my case now, I have a total of three different codes. If I take one of me keys to the hardware store and have them clone 5 copies of it, I'll have a total of 8 keys but still only 3 codes. That's why I said I didn't know if the blanks I bought off eBay were capable of being turned into clones.
Don't lose the key you've got!

They sure did. I tried to get my key copied at a hardware store and was told I couldn't because of the chip. Aside from that, the sentry key thing flashes on the dash when i turn it on.
