Partially cover it up with a piece of cardboard when it gets real cold.

As for the coolers, no need to spend big bucks on a nig name brand one. I bought a used WJ trans cooler for $20 for my YJ and the difference in the trans temp on long journeys or when wheeling was like night and day. I mounted it in front of the radiator and it worked wonders.

Yeah, my concern is that belly up there isn't a place it won't eventually get smooshed or puntured by a stick or rock. I figured that area would be kinda safe then the first time out I managed to tear my pretty new driveshaft up right near the damn transfer case yolk.

Ditto; find the size cooler and fan you want, grab a thermostat and some wiring/hoses and install it. The Derale unit is certainly very nice and it takes the headache out of finding the parts individually, but I just can't see spending that much on a cooler when one can be made for much less money.

It's all about fighting for real estate for some of us. I already have a big cooler in front of the radiator for steering. So for us LJ guys.....I really like where mine is.

I meant to slide under and see if there is any space there on the TJ this morning.


In a more northern climate, is it all that advantageous to have it under body versus in front of the radiator?

The disadvantages I see with up front is the lack of temp control/fan and the potential to increase underhood/coolant temps.

Personally I have a smaller manifold-type one in front of the radiator, and the fan driven one going underneath is more of a "just in case". I'm still researching parts in my spare time, but I'm thinking of getting a fluid control thermostat or two and bypassing the coolers as necessary so that they're only being used when actually needed.
