K&N makes a pre-filter called an Outerwears that provides additional filtration. On top of that, I placed an oiled Unifilter foam filter. That kees the additional dust out of my engine that the K&N by itself was letting in.

So far as maintenance of the K&N goes, just clean it with a good quality detergent from the inside out, rinsing from the inside of the filter towards the outside. I use Simple Green, 409, or Fanastic... all have worked well for me. Or you can use K&N's special cleaner, although it's pretty expensive.

Once it's clean and dry, you must use K&N's special oil to treat it so it can work as effectively as possible. Nothing else will work properly so if you don't buy K&N's cleaner, at least buy and use K&N's filter oil. In-between washings, K&N says it's ok to occasionally spray it with more oil (right over the trapped dirt) to keep its filtration level up as high as possible.
