If you are doing this for more power, then don't. You will not notice any increase in power. It will only make it a little louder.

I was going to buy one of these as well for my wifes 98 TJ SE until I seen the price.
What I ended up doing was making my own using a K&N type cone filter (made by APC, but is identical to the K&N) and some PVC pipe from Home Depot. Quite honestly I didn't notice any difference in performance or gas mileage. It was louder tough. I'm actually going to go back to the stock set-up because at one point I took the filter off and found a fine layer of dust inside the tube. It makes me wonder what actually made it into the motor. I think the address for the pics of the initial set-up is photos.yahoo.com/bc/sharistj Don't bother with the www. just paste it into your browser as is. If that doesn't work or you have questions, e-mail me. If you're looking for more power, do the 4.0 TB swap.

Hey GzrGlide, great job on your air tube. What size PVC did you use? Got any instructions to go with the pics?

I'll have to measure the tube for ya. In fact I'll measure the elength as well and pm you with the info. I think I do still have the instructions somewhere, including a parts list. Bear with me and I'll get you all the info. It was real easy to do and didn't take long at all.
If anyone else is interested, let me know and I'll add ya to the list. Mike

Thanks. I can't wait. I was gonna get an K&N for $160 including shipping but wasn't sure if it was worth it. Do you think yours is as good? What about a heat shield in the future?

I don't know how mine compares to the K&N, but it was probably very comparable. Remember that the key is to get the air into the TB as quickly and as cold as possible.
I won't get into the whole laminar flow idea but if you play around with it and find the best setup with the least amount of bends you'll be better off. As I said though, I'm going back to the original setup. Too much dust getting past the filter. The set-up in the pictures ws my starting point. I was going going to wait until I had a set-up that worked and then go to a muffler shop and have them bend a pipe to the same shape using the prototype as a template. Heat Shield: Yeah, I tossed a couple of ideas around for that and decided that the best way to solve that would be with either a piece of bent sheet metal bolted to the fenderwell where the original airbox was or to use that silver heat reflective tape around the pipe. Something else to consider is that the open filter is somewhat exposed to water when going through the deep stuff or flying through deep puddles. Right now (until the stock airbox goes back on) i've got the filter mounted directly onto the TB with a 90 deg elbow. The open end of the filter faces directly forward and is the highest point in the engine compartment. Have you seen this before: http://www.darksiderz.co.uk/technical/humsnork/index.htm If I get brave enough, I might try that one.
