Explorer? hmm, I thought there were a couple of people including the OP that used those and had to cut them.

Please follow up if you get a chance to measure it, it would be nice to know if it's a no mod fit (salvage yards don't take returns around here).

the explorer rails i got fit onto the top no cutting needed but the tj top curves a bit in the front so i didn't want to bolt that part down because of the constant stress of it being bent. i might go back and cut a slit in it to bend to the tj top

Does the rack from the explorer just unbolt from the roof? I had a guy the junkyard tell me it need to be cut from the roof.

Yeah the rails. I figured he was just trying to get me to pay for them to remove them (he said they'd charge $100). HA! I guess I look like an idiot.

Indeed. But a few mins with a hacksaw/band saw/cutoff wheel. You've got exactly what you need

Explorer rack, $20 at the jy. I unbolted it myself. they use a large phillips screw into a threaded rivnut in the roof of the Exploder. The hardest part was finding one that would unscrew. If I remember, I only cut about 4-6 inches off each track using a cutoff wheel. The TJ roof is curved a bit, but the tracks flex enough to bolt them right down. I used ss hardware with fender washers underneath. I also used rubber washers on the inside to seal it. No leaks at all. I have had it for over a year now and have hauled anything from 2x4s to a 16ft kayak with no issues.

That's what I thought. But I was running low on time and the roof was covered in snow. I have an LJ, so I don't think I'll need to do any trimming. I'm mounting a conferr cargo rack to it.

go down to harbor freight and get two atv racks and bolt or weld them together.

Works fine and about $350 cheaper. I would add a 6 to 8" piece in the middle just to make it a wee bit longer.
