Jerry Cans

Buying two jerry cans for gas to put on back of TJ. I've seen these in the various magazines:

http://www.4wd.com/shop/productdetail.asp?model=tj&productsku=11010

and I found this site:

http://www.generatorjoe.net/product.asp?0=214&1=215&3=964

Any comments/suggestions would be great. I'm looking for steel jerry cans with a narrow spout to fit the TJ's unleaded hole. Thanks, Joe

The top link is for a Blitz brand and is what I use, which is probably the most commonly used can out there. The other looks good too, with the only real functional difference being the Blitz has a lip on the bottom with the other jerry can having a rounded bottom. Some jerry can holders work with either style bottom, others like my OR-F require the jerry can have the lip on the bottom. So just make sure that you match the requirements of whatever carrier you plan to use and go for it.

The above are OK and I have several. The outside might have some spot rust that has to be sanded and painted. A small dent in the can will not crack the inner paint lining. A big dent will crack the lining exposing bare metal and a place for rust to start. Avoid cans with a big dent in them. I know from experience that the lids absolutely do not leak if the gasket is in good shape and the lids are extremely easy to open and close without any tool. However, getting a spout that fits can be a problem. If you use a Super-Siphon, then that's not a issue. Also, these cans will float when filled with gas or diesel fuel.
The inside of the cans is coated with a special paint so they will not rust inside.

I highly recommend the all-plastic Scepter fuel cans. They cost about the same as a Blitz can and, of course, will never rust inside or out. The lid can be tightened and opened by hand and will not leak even if the can is full and stood upside down in the hot sun. These are the cans that the US and Canadian military are using. Two kinds of spouts are readily available and I recommend first getting the smaller diameter one that fits in an unleaded vehicle fill pipe.
Scepter cans fit into the current crop of gas can holders.
Google "Scepter MFC" for suppliers. Davidson's is very good.

Blitz cans, around since the dawn of time, are old tech and prone to leaking at the welded seam at the bottom of the can and rusting inside. Tightening and removing the lid so it won't leak usually requires some sort of tool.

Hope you'r not offended Jerry
Thanks.

Not sure what type of holder I will have - AtoZ is making the the bumpers/tire swing/gas carrier right now. I'll have to have a little more patience and wait to see which type it is. A week without buying something for the jeep is like a week without sunshine! Thanks for that heads up info. I would've completely missed that. Joe

Whoa! For that price, I could paint a set moss green just for show while cruising around town and get a set painted red for gas! I'll have to check on those when the carrier arrives. Thanks. Joe

the nato can that I got from sportsmans guide came looking like new. They didn't have any dents or rust. Lookee like the liner was fresh. I will probably buy another one her soon. The one I bought was $20 shipped to my door. For the price I will stick with those. I like the Others but my budget keeps me watching every penny. Especially when the wife doesn't like the Jeep and feels money sould be directed elswhere.....

I just received 2 cans from Cheaperthandirt.com. These things are great. They're the NATO style and are almost brand new. There isn't any scratches, rust, or paint....and haven't been used. They were $12 and also order the spout along with them.

Ain't it a shame when the gasoline costs more than the can! LOL

$13.00 can, $20.00 gas

Also, look at Scepter Military Fuel Cans. offroadrecovery.com has them at best price I found. Yes, they are plastic, but absolutely do not emit vapors, don't rust, don't spark, don't dent (yet), designed to hold vapor pressure of gasoline. Come in OD green with red, cap retaining strap to ID gasoline. Can also get water cans too. Will not fit can carrier with "hook" for lip at bottom of can as these do not have a lip. Will fit Blitz carrier though. Saw some of these on the news today in a Military vehicle. The 3/4" fill spout works well too.
