Jeeperman Tire Carrier Writeup/Install

I got my new bumper/tire carrier yesterday.

Bad news though - the box was damaged in transit. A few scratches - nothing major, but it appears some stuff fell out - like my 3rd taillight and who knows what else.

I have the installation doc from the Raingler site, but it doesn't cover how to install the locking mechanism (the one that holds the carrier OPEN). I had heard snap ring pliers were helpful, but I don't have any hardware that would indicate that use, like springs or c-clips or anything like that.

Does anybody have a good writeup of a Jeeperman tire carrier install? I tried the JeepHorizons one, but it is an older design and doesn't really cover the areas I need more detail in.

It's pretty straight forward other than that hold open pin. You put the pin straight in and then compress the spring and use a pair of snap ring pliers with the supplied snap ring and place it into the groove that is machined into the tube.

Make sure you pack grease into the bearings. If you have any other questions, give Eddie a call... he WILL walk you through the install step by step.

I think that is my problem. I have no springs or anything that remotely resembles a hold open pin. I think when the carrier box was broken, more than just my 3rd taillight came out.

I know Eddie and Chris will take care of me. They always have. But it just kinda sucks that Fedex would screw it up and cause this kind of grief. The scratches I got from the box being broken is one thing. The lost contents just piss me off. I know it is not Raingler's fault. I can't install it until next week anyway as I'll be out of town, so at least there is time for Raingler to get the parts to me.

When you are talking about the grease, should I put grease on the bearings before I install them or just make sure I use the grease gun on the zerk fittings before I start swinging the carrier around?

All the parts should be in a small box within the big box, and they will all be in a plastic bag... so unless the small box was broken too, all the parts should be there. Just the bumper and the swingaway itself will be in the big box.

My carrier had multiple boxes in it. 2 I believe. One box was the frame tie in kit and bolts. The other had a plastic bag with various parts in it such as the shims, bearings, some bolts, the latch, the hinge cap, etc, but no springs of any type and no bolts long enough to go through and act as a lock pin.

Like I said, I think the hole in the main tire carrier box was big enough to let at least one box slip out (the 3rd taillight), and I wonder if anything else did. I'll call Eddie and Chris once they open and find out what I need to complete the job. All I know is, there is NO spring anywhere in the boxes I have, which leads me to the conclusion that Fedex messed it up - not Raingler.

I know they'll take care of me.

You should also have a black rubber bumpstop and a black hard plastic spacer. If you dont have those either it does appear you lost some things.
