Jeep Won't start

Hey all -

My jeep is refusing to start, and I was hoping someone here might have some advice for me. Its a 2004 Wrangler, 5-speed manual. Tried to start it last night. The car sounds like it is completely dead (doesn't turn over, no clicking like the starter is trying). I figured the battery was drained, so I had a friend try to jump it. Car started when the jumper cables were hooked up, engine would run when I was giving it gas, but then would immediately die if I took my foot off the gas peddle (won't idle). Had a AAA tow truck come out, and he hooked up a second set of jumper cables running from the battery to the frame of the jeep, at which point it started up and kept running without any problems. Took all of the cables off and was able to drive it home. Parked the car, turned it off, and it immediately went dead again. The tow truck driver said he thought it was an issue with the ground connection between the alternator and the battery.

Basically I was just wondering if anyone could confirm/suggest a few other possibilities before I start pulling wires off and trying to replace them. One additional piece of information, I looked at the starter motor and solenoid this morning, and both are completely covered in rust. I'm planning on replacing the starter at some point, but I'm not sure if it would be related the issue I'm currently experiencing (as I don't see why it would start with a jump and then immediately die).

Any advice you guys have would be great. Thanks
