Jeep wont go into gear but it comes and goes?

Today I got in to my Jeep to back out of my driveway and it wouldnt go into reverse(it grinds), it did go into 1st but it took alot of effort. I checked my clutch fluid and it was ok, l also checked and there are no leaks. I then drove a short distance and it shifted fine even into reverse. Sometimes when I depressed the clutch pedal I heard a clicking/clunking noise and I could feel it in the pedal. When I run it through the gears while driving I can sometimes hear a whining noise. But the hard shifting and grinding in reverse still comes and goes (it comes more than it goes) I cant feel the clutch slipping at all, and it doesnt smell like its burning at all either.

It is a 1999 4.0 5spd

Help me please

DAN

how many miles are on it? Reverse in the TJ's is notorious for being tough, i go 4th to reverse and that usually syncronizes it or however you want to say it.

My clutch clicks when i fully let it out too (can hear it better when its not started). hasnt failed me yet?

I have 99,000 miles, i know its hard to get into reverse but i tried everything it just wouldnt go, and the clicking felt more like something was binding up in there.

Off topic,
My dad told me that some vehicles have an inspection plate on the bell housing that you can just take off and see whats going on in there, Why cant it be that easy?

I just had a friends jeep that would not go into gear while he was driving it. Turned out to be a manual trans fluid issue. It had leaked out and he did not know it. He replaced the fluid and all is fine now.

its a 99, have you ever changed the fluid in the tranny?

Pull the fill plug (to make sure you can open it)
Pull the drain plug (to let it drain)
Replace drain plug
fill tranny
repalce fill plug..

voila... do a search for more info, theres a million threads on it im sure..

I have a similar thing going. Clutch seems to have a slight creak hinge feeling sometimes. 1st is cranky in the morning sometimes, especially this winter and reverse as well. And the main thing that made me reply; I've gotten a horrible whining noise when 3 or 4 time recently when it was very cold and I didn't have to time to warm her up.

My plan as of right now is to check my fluids at lunch and also make plans to due the fluid maintenance. I've been trying to learn to do all this stuff myself but I'd much rather get it done before it' a problem than put it off because I can't find the time. Also, most places don't seem to familiar with TJ lubrication stuff.
