Jeep TJ spare tire carrier

Hey guys, I have a tubular bumper on my 97 TJ. I wanted to get a swing away tire carrier without getting a new bumper. Is that at all possible?

There are a handful of tub mounted options, but I've got no idea if they're any good. What size tire?

OR-FAB sells one, as does TnT. They mount to the tub, not the Jeep's bumper.

With a 31, is it just for aesthetics that you want a different tire carrier? A 31 isn't excessive for the stock one.

my gate hinges bend down some when i open it with my 31x10.50. I think a 31" is to much weight.

Correlation is not necessarily causation. Even the newest TJ is at least 6 years old. A lot an happen in all that time.

If you want it on the bumper, buy the tire tire carrier of your choice. Any decent welder can put in a "pipe" for it to pivot arm. A good welder will cap the top, and put in a grease zerk too.

Jeep also put underpowered 4 cylinders in em. They also used IC engines that only last 300- 400k miles in em.

My point is, nothing is perfect just because it came from the factory. A Rubi 245 tire weighs less than a 31x10.50 thats for sure. Also the later model hinges are horrible compared to the early TJ hinges. Just because Jeep did it, doesnt mean it was for good reason.

GR8TOPS Exogate mounts to the tub and uses the existing tailgate to hold up heavier spares. Good price too.
