jeep was sput sput sputing along this morn and wouldn't go faster
i have an automatic 97 wrangler. lately, when turning on my jeep it sputters and than if i shift into reverse or drive it sputters and cuts off or it kindof sputters as i start to drive and then it works fine. this morning, different story....it did the sputtering when i started up....and then as i was driving....it wouldn't go faster....and sputtered along the street. i will take it in to the Jeep Doctor....but, kindof want a gist as to what is wrong with it so i won't get ripped off.....

Replace your O2 sensors. 97's do that after awhile. You can do it yourself and save bucks. When I had a 97 a garage quoted me 237.00 for the sensors plus labor...needless to say he didnt and will never get my business.

is it displaying any engine codes?
I would make sure that you have the right fuel pressure at the injectors, which would show fuel pump and filter are ok, that there are no vacuum leaks, that the air filter, plugs, wires, rotor and cap all look good. I have had similar issues with other cars, and everytime it has been some sort of vacuum leak, either in emission control systems or integral vacuum for the motor. I know that crank position sensors can cause some funky things, and I know when my brother's TPS went bad, it acted similar to what you are describing.

I was about to post a similar issue. I don' t want to give in to a stealership, but I am at wits end too.
My sputters from about 1600 RPMs on up (not as noticable up top). When I am driving, I can feel an obvious drop in power then it comes back and goes out again. I had the TPS codes, and replaced the TPS. Seemed better for a while, but now the stutter is back... I could replace the O2 sensors, but I thought I would see the engine light come on if they were spent. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. ![]()

If replacing the O2 sensor doest work my money is on the cat. Had a 97 with 100k and change on it, the cat had gotten so bad that the pieces of it had broken off and clogged it up. It behaved exactly like you're describing.
