Its in gear and going, slowly, loudly, and no HP...

So I did a search already and came up blank. I'm new and, by all accounts, clueless. Ergo, I seek your diagnostic help.
I've had the 01 TJ since October, all is well. However, about 5 or 6 times over the last few months I'll be driving (its a daily), come to a complete stop, then shift to 1st and go. Jeep goes, shift to 2nd, lags and sounds a bit loud, slower than usual... shift to 3rd, lags big time, a bit louder, think I'm stuck in 4th and the exhaust has fallen out, HP is nowhere...pull over, shut her off...pray to the Jeep gods...assess bank account...re-start. All is well, like nothing ever happened.
Any idea (keep in mind I don't have one), what is going on?

Sounds like a glitch in the ECU (Engine Control Unit).

Have you checked your codes? Are you using platinum sparks plugs?

Wow - I am clueless.
How do I check the ECU, Skeezer? And why would that cause the lagging and loudness?
And FireSpark - I couldn't even tell you if there were spark plugs in the engine.

The ECU controls everything. The spark, idle, air, timing, etc. You'd probrably have to take it out and have a dealer put it on a computer to check it.

But I would first change the plugs & try putting a good additive in your gas to clean the injectors, etc.

No, it hasn't yet..
I'll put in some additive when I fill it up today, then I guess I'll get the spark plugs checked out and go from there.
