It's ALIVE... mostly that is!

I just drove the TJ up and down the street with the 32RH automatic transmission that replaced the old 5-speed manual transmission. I'm stoked, it shifts gears fine and no Check Engine light so the locking torque converter must be working ok. It was definitely not a bolt-in job like I expected, even some grinding and welding was required due to the RE longarm skidplate dimensions being set up for a 5-speed, not an automatic.

There's still a lot more little nagging stuff (kickdown cable, new gauges, etc.) to get done including rewiring nearly everything I've added since day one. The auto tranny needed the firewall hole all my add-on wiring passed through so every one of them had to be disco'd. With the new routing they had to take, virtually all of them are now too short so they all have to be either extended or replaced. And with all the 'lectrical gizmos I've installed over the past 11 years, that's a lot of rewiring to be done.

But hey, it DRIVES!

I'd be curious to know your likes and dislikes now after the swap and a few runs because I have kind of contemplated the same but there is a lot I like about my manual though.

Yep the venerable 3-speed 32RH.

Here's a few photos...

#1 Just got the shifter out, that's a gaping hole for sure.
#2 That's the old 5-speed tranny and t-case coming out
#3 Grinding the welds off the skid plate, I had to move the tranny mount forward 5"
#4 Gunnys TJ (Joe) mounting the new deep ATF pickup
#5 Gunnys TJ getting the shifter installed and working

I have to really thank Joe for his help, 3 days worth!

Still have to wire in the tranny temperature gauge, install the kick-down cable (for passing gear), and reinstall all the wiring that had to be torn out, plus a whole bunch of other stuff. A fuel filter is going in too.

At least it's driveable, though it's not ready for the trail yet.

Hmmmm.... not sure why the pics are not click-free, must be the new board software acting up.

Looks nice!!! Hope you like it and get everything buttoned up on it so you can see how it does on the trails!

Edit: Any problems with the deep trans pan and your high clearance skid plate? I'm about to do a tummy tuck on the TJ and just put on the deep trans pan.

Well, it must have been something you always wanted, now you have it, it was worth the effort. Don't accidentally slam on the brake thinking it's a clutch....

No, there is plenty of clearance for the pan itself. If you install a tranny temp sender bung, make sure to mount it on the 45 degree side as below on the left. It's too close to the driveshaft on the flat side nearest the driveshaft where mine is so I had to install the sender into a T-fitting, below, so it doesn't stick straight out.
