Install notes for D-35 terraflex disk brake swap (pics)

I put together a little write up on my website to help out anyone thinking of doing the swap. My drums needed replacement and were nearly totally worn out. I hate drum brakes and plan on keeping the jeep for a long time so i swapped for the convenience factor. Some things that pissed me off is that the disk brake "KIT" does not come with the ebrake cables, and that you need to order 2 of the ebrake cables. Terraflex seems impossible to locate for a phone number or a website, but summit racing was very helpful. They should also have better notes that many wheels will not fit with this kit.

Drum to disk swap

Nice writeup, thanks for posting it. That's a pretty good kit and is what I installed on my TJ 6-7 years ago, and I'm glad you installed it for the convenience factor and not improved braking. Few realize rear disk brakes do little or nothing to help braking performance. Teraflex is at http://www.teraflex.biz/

Right, but compared to my un-adjusted worn out drums there was a noticeable performance increase. I just hate drums, and could not justify buying new parts for a drum setup.

I ended up cutting about 3-4 coils off of the ebrake spring and things work much smoother with better feel on the handle. I also readjusted the ebrake drums and cables for tire chirping, burnin' the clutch in 4 low holding power.

Update: Its been a while and now the rear brakes squeak real bad on a light application. Most of the time its worse after the jeep has sat at work and i go to lunch or go home. In the morning its usually not there at all and if normally won't do it twice in a row. (its usually fine after the first squeak for the rest of the drive). It only happens on light application where i barely push the pedal. It i push harder it wont squeak at all. I've been thinking about pulling the pads and grinding down the leading edge. Any tips would be appreciated, because its really pissing me off!

Did they come with anti-squeal shims? They would be something teflon coated and real thin to go between the caliper pistons and the pads.

I'm adding your write-up to the "brakes" section of my Boot Camp thread.

An anti-squeal compound (sold in tubes at any auto parts store) placed between the pads and calipers is effective too and is easier to find.
