install gears

The guy that was supose to be installing my gears has backed out. Does anybody know of a site that has how to install gears or a post. Would like a real detailed steps and pictures but anything would do. I think I have all the tools and ready to go just would like some steps to go by. How much are you paying for you gear installs?

You're not going to learn to set gears properly by following a manual or some write-up. This is something you'd learn in a tech school, where there's room for error.

The cost to regear is around $1000-$1200 parts and labor. Labor is about 5 hours per axle.

If it cost you that much and you cant do it unless you go to tech school you need to get out of jeeping. First off I can put gear and lockers in for less than that If I try front and rear. Setting up gears isnt that hard to do if you have the right tools. My axle is just bare housing right now so labor wont be close to 5 hours even if I had no clue how to do this. The reason I need steps is so that I can have something to jar my understanding of how it goes together. I promise you might I can install gears in both my axle with some steps.

Nothing about this post indicates that you know how to install gears. Sounds like you have tools and want to see how much trouble you can get yourself into.

If you can't ask a question in a public forum without being offended by the answers, Google it. If you want details, very simple: buy a manual!

You should put that in you signature so everyone knows that you're one of the few worthy of owning a Jeep, while the rest of us are mere posers.

Also: If book rate is 5.5 hours for a front pinion and 4.6 for the rear, how can this be wrong?

I'd wish you luck, but I really don't care what happens to you now.

Randy's ring and pinion website do a good step by step written by yukon gears.

Sorry I don't know the url i'm at work, will post it later if nothing else turns up.

Go for it, I have just re-geared my dana 30 and dana 44 to 4.56 and fitted truetrac diffs. at home in my garage.

The only things I found essential were a set of setter bearings, depth micrometer , dial test indicator for measuring backlash, micrometer for measuring shims, torsion bar torque wrench 0-50 in/lb for measuring pre-load, big press for pressing on bearings.

I have now done 300 miles on them with no problems.

oh and patience, do it right first time.

Steve

For the simple fact that I already have my axles apart they take into account you dont that its a bar housing. And share some light on us with this book you have.

As long as you wish me luck I am happy with that. Because I have step by step how to do it now. I will post up a thread to show how if anybody would like.

Set aside from the tools you'll also need to know the tolerances and torque specs for everything. Why not do a write up? I've yet to see one someone on the forum has done.

just so happens I just got tolerances and torque specs. I might just do a little write up on it. It might not be the best but will try. Still wouldnt hurt for more steps just to look over see if any are more detailed.

please do a write up... take a lot of pictures also.

there isn't anything (non-computer related) any person can't do, without the correct book to follow, and plenty of patience. it's all just a huge puzzle with loads of parts.

You know...you come in here and ask a question...get an answer to that question...then go off on the guy that was giving you advice. I think you should readjust your attitude while you adjust your gears. You came in here saying that you were gonna have someone else do your gears for you...and you wanted to know how much it costs to have them done. so someone politely let you know that gears are not something the common jeeper does on his own as well as the cost...just like you asked...and you respond to him with "you need to get out of jeeping"??? I think an apology is in order! You keep responding to answers you get like that you won't get much help here.

Here are just a couple that I had saved (there are many more out there). Also, a FSM should have good info (I don't have one yet). I went to the library and searched databases and got some good info w/detailed pics. I was all set to start buying the tools, but decided I don't want to have big ole press taking up room in the garage.

http://www.gearinstalls.com/index.htm

I really want to do them myself, but spending over $300 on tools and never using them again vs. $450 for a pro to do 'em is swaying me.

I never said that I was going to get somebody to do it. If I did why would I be asking for steps. I was just wondering about how much everybody was paying to get gears installed.

The guy was no help he was just putting me down saying I shouldnt do it. Thats alot of help.

And anybody paying that much to get gears installed needs to look around and find a better place because thats alittle steep I must say.

I am getting help from other great jeep forum memebers that beleive I can do this not one that are putting me down and telling me to have somebody do it. Sorry but I didnt see any help from him.

Sorry about the face I just thought it went well.

I want to thank the people who helped.
