Idle issue

Here's the deal:

I was driving alone as usual and i came to a stop at a light. when i came to a stop the engine was idling rough, so rough that the whole jeep shook.

I figured it may have been a fluke but decided to drive a bit more to determine whether i should abort my intended trip.

every time i took it out of gear the rpm needle dropped to just above 0 and the dead rattle resumed. i drove to a gas station and added a little gas. when i got back in, the engine would not turn with out me giving it gas. so i shot out of the gas station and headed back home, never taking my foot of the gas long enough for the engine to die.

once i got home and took it out of gear the rpms dropped to 0 and the engine died.

i freaked out and detached the battery, cleaned the terminals, let it sit, and then reattached the battery. the problem seemed to disappear.

i drove to an auto part store and grabbed added some fuel system cleaner and filled the tank with gas.

the issue has yet to reappear.

What happened?

I did that a year ago after a similar problem. I got a tune up and life was good again.

my '04 TJ does it every now and then, from what I've been reading it could be caused in part by the gas stations using Ethanol in the gas... or maybe just a case of bad gas?

however... I just put some injector cleaner in it and a tank of Premium and it has yet to happen in the last few months.

Bad batteries or bad battery connections can cause all sorts of running problems.

It could simply be that you had bad connections at the battery terminals. Cleaning the terminals may be all that was needed. It is also possible that the battery is going bad, and cleaning the terminals will work for now. I don't know how old it is but it might be worth charging it using a proper charger then going and getting it properly load tested at an auto store.

It's unlikely, that it is the battery but i'll rule nothing out (just replaced it in october with diehard gold, but things happen).

oddly enough, the issue happened again last night.. disconnected and reconnected the battery and boom.. jeep running. i have not isolated the issue in my head yet. it worked fine this morning. i think i'll replace the IAC and the TPS if cleaning the IAC does not remedy the issue.

I think i should just give the entire throttle body (sensors and all) a scrub. any advice on how to best do that?

what is the anti cease spray that helps remove bolts without striping them?
