Id rather have Kentucky weather to be honest. By the way my Dad lives in Louisville. Brothers both went to U of L. I love Summer & Fall in Idaho but HATE winters.

Am I the only one who wants more IdahoJeep work to be done. Hey Idaho, I have a great idea for what you could do next to the Jeep. You should powdercoat those shock reservoirs black chrome if possible. Black Chrome Writeup
That would protect them, and would give it a little bit of a shine while keeping it black in the fenderwell.

What about Galvanic Corrosion from the different metals. Aluminium, stainless and iron, the combinaton of any of these together could create that, I think.

Galvanic Corrosion: All metals have specific relative electrical potential. When metals of different electrical potential are in contact in the presence of moisture, a low energy electric current flows from the metal having the higher position in the galvanic series. This is called "galvanic action." Galvanic corrosion is a form of electrochemical corrosion that occurs when two dissimilar metals come together in the presence of an electrolyte to form an electrical couple, known as a galvanic couple. The more noble or cationic the metal, the less likely it will corrode relative to the other metal it is in contact with. It should be noted that mill scale is cathodic to steel and an electrical current can easily be produced between mill scale and the steel. Weld metal may also be anodic to the base metal, creating a corrosion cell when immersed. Additionally, a depletion of oxygen in crevices of a metal can cause the area to become anodic to the metal outside the crevice which is exposed to oxygen.

Just a thought Jevon, you could coat them with the same material used on the frame, may not look as cool as the aluminium ends of the reservoir, but should protect them if this is the cause.

^didn't consider Galvanic action but don't think that is likely as the condition has not worsened. I have seen galvanic action before and it looked different than this. I think something got sprayed on them or I drove through some chemical somewhere as you suggested before. Ill pull the shocks off this winter and try to polish them or something - I doubt I would consider painting them as I like the aluminum look.

btw, you live in Nampa and used my name - Have we met?

We have met. I drove up last year and looked at your Jeep with great envy I was impressed to see it first hand. I still follow silently, thinking some day I would like to do this. I think it will have to wait till I win the lotto, but hey, I can dream -Todd

If you can sand out those pits, and then buff it to a shine again, duplicolor has a really good clear that will protect it. It is called truck and suv clear coat. It has one of those fancy fan nozzles on it. It works great, it is currently protecting my hitch pin, and the reciever. It will let you keep that nice polished look, but keep it protected at the same time, kind of what was done to the Liberty bike that OCC made a few years ago.

^Updates? Jeeps done for now other than maintenance. Just having fun driving it. I will probably take care of the shocks and paint chips over the winter.

Hey... We wanted updates Idaho. You could have at least posted that you are now a judge for TJotM.

BTW, you should start that massive overhaul this winter, 1tons on 3 inches of lift with 39"s would be awesome. Then we could watch another great build.

Just kidding, you already have one of the nicest TJs imho, and I only say what I say because another high quality Idaho build would be more than fun to watch.

Luckrider,
Hey thanks for the kind words - I would really love to build another rig. To be honest I am really happy with my Jeep just like it is. My build achieved all of my goals that I set in the beginning and it is truly an "all around jeep" and suits my needs perfectly so I don't think I will do much to it for a long time. What I would like to do is find an old flat fender and build it up - but that is just a dream at this point. I do miss posting my progress on this site and hearing others comments.

For now my life is full of youth hockey... My older son plays on a High School team and two other teams and my younger son is also on 3 different teams one of which is a travel team and plays in tournaments all over the place. We were in Portland last weekend. In addition to that I am coaching one of the teams my younger son plays for.

The only build I am working on now is myself. I am in decent physical condition from years of hockey and other activities but I have never spent much time lifting iron. I joined a gym a little over a month ago and am working towards getting bigger and stronger. Im hoping to transform myself over the next year like I did my Jeep.

Anyway, I will stick around JF because its such a great forum and as you mentioned I am one of the prestigious judges for the TJ of the month.

I am hoping to make another trip out to Moab in the Spring (if its still open....) What a great place!
