Thanks -

I am going about this very slow.... I need to have my axle trusses welded on and paint all the parts and then I will start in on the lift - I would guess some time in the next couple weeks.

Nice progress!! You might pick up some weld through primer and hit the axles before the trusses are welded on.

So how about calling it "Famous Potatos" I looked quick through and didn't see any suggestions.

Yes, good idea - I had actually planned on doing something prior to the truss getting welded on. Would be tricky to paint once the truss is on. I am not familiar with weld through primer - I will look for some.

Not bad - but I get so tired of hearing about the potatoes living in Idaho... When I travel and mention that I am from Idaho I always get the "oh do you grow potatoes?" question. Yea, everyone from Idaho grows potatoes just like everyone from Kentucky fries chicken..

I am open for more suggestions. - I told my wife I was calling it "project chick magnet" and she did not laugh - not even a smile. She said "how about project money pit" and walked away. Guess I better be careful or my next mod might be a new place to sleep.

It's still early in the build, you got time yet. Towards the end of mine, when a buddy would come over to help, she'd say things like "better get that "thing" done before it ruins his marriage too." Once she started saying things like that I found additional motivation to get my heep mobile. It's done now (mostly anyway) and she's all smiles again.

I received the last few parts of my lift today and laid it out on the floor as it will go onto the Jeep. This stuff is sure heavy and beefy. The belly pan that came today weighs over 60lbs alone!

I have started to prep the parts for painting - just a light sanding and a wipe down with acetone. I hope that will be enough for the hammerite which is supposed to be self priming and adhere well. I bought gallon cans instead of the rattle cans - I plan to spray it with an air sprayer I have that I used for spraying lacquer. I did a test and it worked although I may need to thin it a little.

Here are some photos of the kit (minus the springs, shocks etc...)

Awesome build buddy... Be sure I'll be checking it constantly...

BTW, What is that hammerite? Is it kind of a Herculiner? No, right?

Thanks,

Hammerite is not a type of bed liner or herculiner - it is just good quality enamel paint that has a texture to it - has little dimples in it. You supposedly can paint it right over rust - although I am not going to do that.
Here is what the company says about it:

"Hammerite is a long-lasting quick dry enamel paint that lets you paint right over rust, with no primer needed. Its rust-encapsulating formula and rust-preventive coating are designed to provide both interior and exterior long-lasting metal protection. Hammerite provides a decorative finish that resists corrosion and the weather. This versatile paint can be used for a variety of applications - from covering rust to painting lawn furniture, crafts, machinery, metal wagons and more. It's terrific on iron, steel and most metal surfaces. Hammerite Rust Cap paint dries to the touch in 30 minutes."

I have seen it used on Jeeps and really like the look.

Those parts look awesome. IMHO, I would still use a self-etching primer on the bare steel.

Today after work I got home and found my second shipment of Hammerite paint - so I now have two quarts of grey/silver and two gallons of black. I decided to finish prepping the parts that were to be painted grey/silver and do those first. I have seen others hang their arms from wire to paint so I went this route as well. The Hammerite paint is fairly thick (as compared to the lacquer I am used to spraying) so I thinned it. I used about 1 ounce of Hammerite thinner per 1/2 quart of paint which seemed to work well.

The paint dries incredibly fast - dry to the touch in about 30 minutes. Second and third coats must be applied after it has dried to the touch but before it cures for more than 4 hours. I applied about 3 thick coats. It sprayed better than I had hoped - I got lucky with the right amount of thinner as it went on smooth yet without any runs. The texture is exactly what I had hoped for - nothing like bed liner, but noticeable. It was also easier than I thought to spray into the tight spaces of some of the frame mounts.

My contraption:

Here you can see the texture I am getting:

Here is a shot of the sprayer I am using.. Just a cheap Ingersoll Rand gravity feed. Anyone could paint with it.

After spraying today I have realized that I ordered way to much paint - probably twice as much as I needed. The coverage is better than expected - I suppose I will find other uses for it. I purchased the paint and thinner from James Town Dist. www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=1524&familyName=Hammerite+Rust +Cap+Paint+%22Hammered+Finish%22+Cans

WOW nice build! its making me think, it might be more fun building a modern Jeep rather than a 60 year old one! where did you buy, how much did you pay for your spray gun? I need one here soon...

Nice house too! I like the stonework.

Thanks,

I had a 52 Dodge Power Wagon before this - It ran and I loved it but it needed work that I really couldn't do so I sold it to pay for the Jeep. I think building up a newer vehicle is easier but a classic would be a lot of fun and very rewarding if you have the know how. I purchased my spray gun at a local hardware store for about $45 - I imagine you could find one like it on Ebay for less.
