I see coolant I smell Coolant But can't find leak.

Had the jeep parked for about 4 days while i was running my company truck back and forth to work. Started her up today and smelled coolant coming from the engine compartment. Popped the hood didn't see anything at the time. Drove 45 minutes home, all was well temp gauge stayed at 210 the whole way at highway speeds. Parked the jeep came out about an hour later and had drips of water on the drag link and front axle but still can't see where it's comming from. I have checked all hoses, reservoir, water pump and pulled the radiator cap. I have a feeling it's leaking on cool down but not a clue where.

Look for the white residue. You won't find a small leak when it's hot. Start it up when it's cold and look.

Drips of water or drips of coolant? Drips of water could be condensation from your AC lines. The coolant smell could be your heater core inside the jeep.

Were the drips on the axle on the driver's side or passenger side? Pass side could be A/C, driver's side most likely coolant

When I had a very similar leak I found that it was my upper seal on the radiator where the plastic cap meets the aluminum the crimp had come loose. I replaced the seal and recrimped it only to have it leak again later.

It would fill the channel around the seal with coolant and leak down one side.

Worth a look, no reason it couldnt happen on the bottom.

I love this crap!!

check the Front shaft on the water pump had one leak when hot and most of the antifreez would get sprayed away by the fan blade would only leave a small amount on the ground when I would first shut it off hot.

Hi all

If you are not losing coolant outside, and can smell when you get in,.....it is heater core.........................

Go to AutoZone and barrow their Radiator pressure tester. When your engine is cold, connect tester and pumper up..... if it doesn't hold pressure for 10 minutes, you have a leak, which will be easier to find on a COLD engine that has it's coolant system under pressure.

AutoZone calls is a "Coolant Pressure Tester W/ Adapters" part number is OEM27049

Heater cores don't leak on the ft. axle.

The A/C condensation does though. (Actually, on the control arm)

The key is are you losing coolant? Mine does the same, the smell, pops up now and then. But after a few months I haven't lost a bit of coolant.

The smell?? The over flow bottle. The cap allows the fumes to escape and in the prcoess of heating and cooling down it tranfers coolant back and forth. Every time it does you can smell it.

Freeze plug?

We thought this XJ had a head gasket leak, so we tore the head off and found out the freeze plug on the back of the head had a pin hole in it and was spraying anti-freeze everywhere.

I have heard where guys use these rubber drain block (intended for plumbing use), they change the wing nut for a hex nut and simply insert into edge of freeze out plug, then tighten, no more leak, not need to remove head. I personally haven't done this repair, but I got one I'm going to try it on.
