Ok.... so I have designed it to be wider than the tailgate, and higher than the tire (also tried to allow for larger tires in the future), so as it can still open. Here are the dimensions from the bumper:

Eventually, when I build or source a tire carrier/bumper I will incorporate it into that!

Thanks for the feedback though

the bottom of that 39" verticle bar needs rethinking. you braced and gusseted the top platform but all those same forces now get passed down to the bottom except now they have a 39" lever to help pull it apart.

also... i understand wanting to be able to open the tailgate but any horizontal stress is going to make it "rack" like an ikea bookshelf before you put the back panel on

Good points, particularly the racking issue. I have given it some thought, but can't figure out how to support it without loosing the option to open the tail gate. I had considered bracing it in some fashion to the spare tire mount, but theres that tailgate issue again....

Any thoughts

Bring some bars down and bolt them to the frame. Put them on the outside of the openings to the tailgate. Try and make it so when its empty, the rack is pulled to the back a little so when the rack is loaded, it evens out just like how a TJ sits.

Buy my transmission cooler. Derale TJ cooler.

Why not just go with a hitch mounted cargo carrier? They can be had for less than $100...

where is the satisfaction in that? we are jeep owners, we would rather spend all our extra time, money, blood, sweat, and tears building our own thing. you might as well say " why didn't you just go with a honda?"
