just thought it would be a neat idea if someone could start a thread with only pics and info on home mods. write-ups wouldn't have to be included but a link to one would be nice if it is available. if someone likes the idea, start it up!
Yeah I reinforced the tailgate (original reason for carrier) and put 1/8 inch plate on both sides and ran bolts through for the latch assembly. If it's not stronger it sure is heavier.
edit.... If you're asking about the hinges then yes, I bent 1/8 inch plate to match the contour of the tub and sandwiched the tub between that and the hinges.
I made a cover plate for the spare tire that houses the flood light and rear view camera. It has two pieces. The inner piece slots over the existing 5 x 4.5 bolt pattern and from the reverse side, bolts on to the tire carrier (welded a nut on the back of it to thread it)
The front side has a large tube that serves as a resting plate for the spare wheel until you align it with the studs and slot it in place, making it much easier for one person to place it on. Then in the center is a 1" solid bar with a threaded hole in it.
The cover plate was cut out on a water jet cutter, then a square section behind with 1" inner dimension slides over and is bolted in to lock it in place.
The hole in the middle is for a grommet mount LED which I'll be ordering soon.
Then the finishing touch will be a Jeep emblem in the center.
You can see the inner tube here

Now I just need to find 2003+ window trim to hide all the wires
Interesting...I know people in RV's and Trucks use the cameras in the rear so they can see...but in a Jeep...unless you have neck problems...you can pretty much see... Sure, the tire blocks a bit...but not bad enough so you can't judge...this might come in handy rock crawling...not sure. Anyway, I still think it is neat...I love technology...I would worry about someone yanking that off, though...but I live in San Diego... Nice detail work - I always enjoy seeing your mods, Oman.
That picture is actually from Jim's (otrattw.com) Jeep. He uses his own rig to prototype and test fit many of the panels that he makes. Although I can't get to the car to get a shot of it, I also have one of his switch panels installed. Prices vary with the layout and options you want since they are generally custom made unless you buy a prototype.
Inside the cowl is just a 45 degree elbow pointing slightly downward. I don't have a screen or anything on it since the only intake to the cowl is already screened so I figured it wasn't necessary.
It has to be. Dog has an awesome rig and I know he knows better than to try something like this. It is funny though cause it got everyone talking:laugh:
I think you should unbolt the factory bumper and paint it all to match though.
