The unknown is what gets you, not the known.

I learned this after a spent casing from my vigorous SKS (new CNC Man gas valve) ejected into a flourescent light over my head, which caused two long bulbs to explode over me. Thousands of broken pieces of glass fell all over me and by some miracle I escaped without the slightest injury.

But hey, not my kids, not my eyeballs

The main front piece is the standard 3/16", 2"x4", 54" long. I ordered the front bumper plate, clevis mounts, fairlead adaptor, both hoops and side support bars from AtoZ. I told Zach I was trying to go for the Rokmen front Mercenary GT bumper look. The Rokmen bumper required the use of an aftermarket swaybar and I didn't want to go that route. Rokmen has great quality stuff but I didn't want to pay for something I can make. The Rokmen does use 1/4" vs the 3/16" plate from AtoZ. I thought about cutting the 2x4 bumper down to create an approach angle but after going through 4 small spools of welding wire I just wanted to finish..

From AtoZ the angle on the radiator hoop down bars was correct, but I had to cut out about 2" out from the middle to make it narrower to wrap tight around the head lights - and then cut it to my hood height. The front winch guard angles were correct and I just cut it down to the height I wanted. I angled the front bar about 20 deg. The main top plate was welded to the 2x4 bumper and then I added filler (more welding..). Since both items curved at the weld point it left a small dip at the junction between them. I wanted a relatively smooth top to help keep water from puddling and rusting out so that took a little while to get it to my liking. (..ok, I'm a touch anal). The front bumper piece is welded to the plate on all four sides and then plug welded.

I cut off the ends of the bolt on fairlead that sat under the winch, welded the front side of the fairlead piece to the bumper and then added 1/4" steel gussetting. There is also gussetting on the bottom of the top plate just outside the frame rails. ...and then I added light tabs. The AtoZ plate goes under the two top main bolts and the first swaybar bolt. I didn't like the angle of the swaybar bracket mount coming off the one bolt and the mounts back bolt sits a touch higher where the frame just starts to angle up. So.. I welded additional 3/16" plating to the backside of the main plate to sit under the swaybar mounts to give it one solid surface to sit on.

richs347, I really like that tube work ^^^^. Looks great. I know what you mean about just wanting it to be over....

Since we're posting winch bumpers and all. I got this warn 8274 winch for $200, and the guy said it had bad solenoids, which I was fine with. Come to find out, he just had them wired wrong, hahaha. So I put a lower unit rebuild kit in it ( $38 ), broke it down to its basic parts and sand blasted it, and painted it with wheel paint ( $15 ).

After words, I desided that I was going to modify my standard warn winch plate with winch guard to fit a 8274, which in not only larger, but a totally different mount style winch.

This is the warm plate after it was extended forward by 2 inches, the face of it was completely replaced with a 3/8 peice, added 3/8 gusits, and added my 1'' thick D-ring tabs.

Then, I gave it a coating of industal black engine paint, scuffed the paint, and added dupicolor truck bed coating.

ANd here it is all mounted up on the stock bumper with the winch guard mounted. I had to space and angle the winch guard a bit too. Its also coated in the truck bed coating. Sorry for the crappy pics, my camera hates floresnt lighting, which is all I have in my garage.

How's this for grill to winch clearence ?

I also increased the mounting bolt sizes from 7/16 bolts to 1/2 stainless bolts.

I spooled the 150' cable in it Sunday, but haven't gotten any pics just yet. Its blazing fast compared to other winches, wow. After it gets a couple layers on the reel, its almost too fast to keep up with.

Not bad for $268 total investment ( other than time ).

using that 3/8 steel plate makes everything look really "beefcake", but it came with a price. It dropped the front of the jeep by about 2 inches, so I'm going to install some spring spacers. At least I have the V8, so it didn't really get any slower ( at least that I can feel ).

Be very careful with the wife mod. Uninstallation can be extremely expensive. Wife mods have been known to take the Jeep and all other mods during the uninstall process. Also, make sure you service your wife mod properly as often as humanly possible. Wife mods not properly serviced may malfunction or uninstall themselves at any time.
