just thought it would be a neat idea if someone could start a thread with only pics and info on home mods. write-ups wouldn't have to be included but a link to one would be nice if it is available. if someone likes the idea, start it up!
I modified my trans skid's crossmember so it would not rub my driveline. I welded a 3/16 strap to the bottom of the crossmember under the area I wanted to cut out. Then I cut out the front of the crossmember and removed it. Then I made two cuts on top perallel to my front cuts. Next I bent the top down and welded it to the strap I welded in previousley. It is harder to try to explain what I did than it was to do it.
Since I now have the LoD rear tire bumper/carrier I needed to get a third brake light on there somehow. So I took the factory third brake light and cut it seven and a half inches from the top. I drilled a 1/2 hole just below where the light has that little cover on the front side and mounted it to the stud at the top of the tire carrier. The stud is there to mount a hi lift jack. (My hi lift is mounted inside of the jeep.) I have a few inches of clearance between the top of the spare and the light. This allows for up-sizing the tires in the future.
The wiring is the same as factory only with added length.
I did the exact same thing. But got a thin piece of metal and bent it at a 90*. Drilled pilot holes in the very top of the carrier and then used self tapping bolts to fassen it on there. It sticks up a bit more so if I decide to go w/ 35's some day I'll have clearance. I also didn't go through the bolt provided on the carrier b/c I have my Hi-lift attached to it. Here's a pic.
Not a really big deal but I bought some rubber isolators (those things are really hard to find! ) and I extended my bumpstops. Because of the backspacing on my wheel, I had to sand sandwich two 1" isolators together and sand one of them down. I did this on the left and right hand bumpstops on the tailgate. The bottom was fine.
I also raised my 3rd brake light.
The tire fits much better now and it is only slightly harder to clost than a stock tire. So I'm not worried about it. It's temporary anyways. But it's definitely a requirement (IMO) if you are going to mount a larger tire on your tailgate. Otherwise damage could occur really quick. It isn't really pretty, but I'm not trying to show off my bumpstops anyways.
I made a tire carrier. I've had the bumper for 3 years, ordered a bare steel tire carrier frame, built the rest. The bare steel frame and hinge came from www.tuffdesigns.com. This is only the 3rd or 4th thing I've made, and the first time I've used solid wire & Argon. Everything else I've done was with flux-core. Used a Lincoln Electric Pro-Mig 175 for all of this.
Here's the bumper on day 2, hinge welded on both top & bottom. Swing stops and latch stops done. I also fabricated that grey bench with flux-core.
Before gussets, latch attachment and caps are all done:

Finished, there are jerry can mounts and a hi-lift mount...just not bolt on here.
I still need to make the third brake light holder....gotta think about it for a while. Also going to make a trail rack and a CB antenna mount.
I made a air manifold for my oba. Not much but still saved some cash.
