I'm going full rightard.

As expected, after lifting and 33" tires to my RHD TJ with 124k miles, the trans started slipping in overdrive. Cleared the code and got back on the road with overdrive locked off. I had planned to have parts stashed next year to convert to manual transmission. I'm planning to install an ax 15 early in the spring. I was raised by a transmission shop owner, should be a piece of cake.

It's had a noisy planetary for 6 months, I knew it would not be long before it pooped. I'm just glad it didn't strand me on the way to work.

You won't be disappointed. My 32RH slipped between all 3 gears for the longest time. I figured out that manually shifting didn't allow the trans to slip. So since I was shifting for the trans anyway, why not add a lower first gear and an overdrive? I'm surprised you didn't opt for the 6 speed.

Look into the Toyota first gear swap for AX15s. Good luck!

Will do. I replaced synchros in my son's YJ so I'm already familiar with the ax 15. The only downsides were I cracked the 5th gear removing it, and the transfer case adapter was busted from a rusty mount, which I tigged.. it's holding up fine after 2 years.

My AX15 is bolted in, mostly. I just need to find a starter bolt, and drill the crossmember for the new mount location. Should be test driving it by the weekend.

Awesome! It really makes a huge difference going from an auto to a manual. You will easily feel more power. Great job.

You know what they say about great minds...

Normally going from an auto to a manual is a downgrade. But, in your case with the 42RLE, anything is an improvement.

I finished the transmission conversion a few months back and followed up with a slipyoke eliminator and new driveshaft. It's been running great, just a little expensive on gas as a daily driver. Very reliable and fun to drive.

That extra low first gear for the AX15 is very interesting indeed, I'm looking to swap up from my AX5 soon, and deeper gearing does not hurt those four squirrels at all!
