Hypertech III

I bought the Hypertech III hoping for some more power to help get into 5th gear.

But after reading the post about the edge product, I am now thinking I wasted 370 bucks.

The programmer won't read my jeeps calibration and hypertech wants me to send it in to them at my cost for shipping so they can update it. (Kinda pissed me off) not that I am a cheap skate by any sense, but that I paid 370 for a product and it doesn't work.

well any how, I asked if I can return it and was told yes.

My question is, Should I keep the unit and send it in for an update or return it and buy something else.

I am brand new to the jeep mod thing,

I just got over the Diesel bug after about 2-3 now I went and caught the JEEP BUG.

thanks for you time.

Complete waste of money from what I've been told by people who wasted their money on it. Return it.

Can you still return it after you get it updated (if at that point you are not pleased with the product)??

I use Hypertech's programmers all the time (mainly for calibrating speedometers of Ford/Chevy trucks I have lifted) but I won't buy one for my Jeep. They're pretty much only for extremely high rpms and wide-open throttle so far as performance gains go... and those gains are minor at best together with the need for high-octane fuel afterwards.

Thanks fellas,

I was kind of fearing that I wasted my money. I guess I use the money toward bumpers

That's very true.... the Hypertech programming only takes effect at WOT. It made a very noticeable difference on my S10 ZR2. I could pull away from other S10's off the line or at highway speeds with ease. I also used it to firm up the shifting and compensate the speedo for the larger tires I put on after the body lift.

On that truck, it was well worth the money, IMO.

On my Jeep though, I don't think it would be worth it because with the manual trans there's no benefit there, and I don't use WOT much anyway so the power gains would be useless. The only benefit I see in the Jeep is for the speedo calibration feature.

Which would only be useful for Rubicons that don't use speedometer gears. Regular Wranglers only need a $13 speedometer gear to re-calibrate the speedometer.

thanks guys. the programmer can not adjust for tire size on the Jeep.

I will be taking it back. I also bought some stainless products that I will return so I will have about 600 to put toward the bumpers or something else. I would really like a lift 2.5-4 ", but don't know which brand will provide the smoothest ride.

Maybe the aftermarket will be able to clean up on Jeep engine programmers when the new Wrangler comes out with a SOHC V-6. You just can't tap into that old 4.0L I-6 anymore, though.

Hey, don't get me wrong; I love my ol' dinosaur straight six! Straight cylinders and straight from the factory. No mods needed.

Really? I thought all 03+ models were done that way... Anyway, you shouldn't need to get the Hypertech just to adjust the speedo because the dealer can do it with the DRB, but it sounds like only for the Rubicon.

Interesting... Hypertech's site sais it will! So if Jerry is correct, then they should add a note that sais it only works for Rubicon models!

Just a side note to the Rubicon deal, Rubicons are calibrated for 33's stock and the speedos are off from the factory since they run the metric equivilent of a 31. I run 35's on mine and the speedo is off 2 mph at 60mph, IMHO it is not worth dealing with. I should also mention mine is a 2003 I know 2004's are the same but 05 could be diffrent.
