hp30 swap questions

I have a buddy who flipped his yj a few months ago, and is parting it out. he has a hp30 axle on it, and I was wondering if it was a good canidate to swap into my tj. I know that the axle is vacuum disconnect. Will this swap work? I saw something on stu's website about it, but was wondering if I should go through the trouble or just get a junkyard xj non disco. the reason I ask is because it has 4.10 gears, and all the ones I have found at the local pick and pull yards are not the same ratio (will be swapping a 4.10 8.8 as well)

if it's cheap, go for it.
you'll need to do the CAD delete, I'd weld all the tube to casting joints.

Many say the vacuum delete version is stronger on that side due to the big square housing the disco was installed in. All you need to do is replace the 2-piece axle shaft with a 1-piece replacement & screw a cover over the opening after installing a set of new internal axleshaft seals.

And what about the control arm and coil spring mounts?...

Whoops yeah, glad you caught that. It'd be a lot better if he found one out of an XJ since that will bolt right in. It'd be a pretty fair project to make that YJ leaf spring HP D30 fit into a coil spring TJ.

I went with the XJ. That way the control arms take the beating, not the drive shaft. Hopefully...

not worth it to convert a YJ HP30. You'd need new mounts. at that point, I'd just be looking at a waggy 44. Might as well find an XJ HP30. I found mine on craigslist with 4.10 gears for $100.

Jerry,
My buddy will sell me a complete vacuum disconnect HP D30 out of an XJ for $50. Will my TJ shafts fit in there? I don't see why not, just making sure. Thanks!!

mike, they will, but you'll require new out/inner passenger seals. I did this with my TJ. Stu has a good write up on his site with part numbers...look for the "TJ shafts in a YJ" conversion article. Can't remember the part numbers off the top of my head.

I also converted the outer knuckles/hubs/rotors to 99+ TJ.
