HP Dana 30 or not
I was at the wrecking yard this afternoon and saw alot of cherokee's with High Pinion dana 30's. Is it be a good idea to change my low pinion to a high pinion?

Sure, especially if you're going to spend the money on regearing. Might as well spend the money on a stronger axle. It's the perfect front axle for 35's or smaller. If you're considering going bigger than 35's, I'd skip straight to old school HP D44's or D60's.

Why not? It's a bolt in...

If you plan on leaving the front open (I would with 35's) make sure to get one with 4.10 gears so you can reuse the carrier. I bought a HP D30 for less then the cost of a new carrier. The 4 bangers came with 4.10 gears.

Love mine. I put a TruTrac in and it works great. For a grand total of $700 give or take $20, I have a stronger axle, better gears, a TruTrac and two spring clips. They can really take a beating.

One more nice thing....they use shims to set the pinion bearing preload, not a crush sleeve.

Does it matter what year it comes out of?

This talks about differences in years
They're are a few pluses to the HP. It will automatically give you a better drive shaft angle, and you're less likely to be bashing your u-joint, plus as people have mentioned it is stronger and the 4.10 gears. I plan on doing this when I can afford gears for the rear as well. Last edited by bmxrules39; 10-11-2009 at 11:53 AM.. |

Yes. You want a non-disco housing from (I believe) 1995-2000 XJ. HP and non-disco=good.

Will I need to modify the drive shaft or should I grab the one from the donner?

you can go nondisco, re use your old axle shafts and install a ~$50 block off kit. That's what I did. Some people claim it cld even be stonger because of the added metal along the passenger side tube

You shld be fine. Think about it, if you're lifted this just puts the ds closer to stock height
