HP D30 Differences.

Hello all,
Im ready to upgrade my front and rear. The rear I will be getting from ECG supply, it will be an 8.8 with 4.56. I plan on keeping 35" tires.

My question is, I can have a HP30 built from them for about $900. That's with 4.56 and stock shafts, my knuckles, ect.

What is the advantages of the HP30 over my stock 30 now??

The reason why I am asking is the cheapest re-gear price I got for the front was 1G, just to put 4.56's in.

So for the same price I can get a HP30 shipped ready to go.

Also will my currie HD bolt right up to the HP30?

let me know what you guys think.

There are about 1,000,000 threads regarding this. Go totthe bottom of the page and check out the similar threads section...VVVVVVV right down there.

You can build an HP30 yourself for cheaper the ECG can. I am done building my HP30 and totalled it all up and for what I built, I built it for $300 cheaper than ECG would have.

Find a better place to do your regear. My regear cost me $330 for labor, a lube locker and a new/used 4.10 carrier (mine had .020 runout).

The difference. High Pinion keeps your driveshaft out of the rocks, and runs the gears on the thicker stronger side (drive/coast...I forget) making them 30% stronger.

I have called more places then you can think of in my area. $1000 was the cheapest for re-gear with gears.

For me it was 150.00 for the HP D30. 600.00 for gears, install kit, help installing them. 239 for the aussie locker, 120.00 for new balljoints, 20.00 for upper control arm bushings. And about 30.00 in grinding wheels, sand paper, and paint. I used the axle shafts, unit bearings, and knuckles from the low pinion axle because the 93 HP D30 had the smaller u-joints. I have right about 1200.00 in mine. And it was about a 3 month project working on it when I had time. If you can get the axle from east coast for 900.00 shipped that is what I would do. It will save you a lot of time locating/pulling the axle, cleaning and painting the axle, and time for the shop to regear it.

Thats what I am going to do. I am basically trying to get the advantages of the HP30 over my D30. I used the search function, but would like to hear from people who are running it.
I wont need adjustable upper arms, i read that some people needed them?

Your currie steering will bolt right up. The advantages of the high pinion are strength, as well as better caster/pinion angles with a lifted jeep. I have adjustable uppers, but I believe the stock arms will work fine. The high pinion places the driveshaft a few inches higher than the low pinion.

Yep, it puts the driveshaft higher so the control arms will get hit before the driveshaft does

Thanks guys. For the price of a re-gear, it just makes sence to upgrade to the HP30. When I priced it out it came to $967. I am going to re-use my knuckels and brakes. I am not locking it because we have terrible ice and snow here.
I would like a E-locker but dont have the extra 1,600 for front and rear.

HPD30
Dana 30 High Pinion XJ,TJ, ZJ
(4764224)
ADD SHAFTS: Stock Shafts (+$80.00)
Add U-bolt Yoke: New U-Bolt Yoke 1310 (+$42.00)
FINISH: Flat Black
Gear Ratio-Reman Unit: D30HP-456 (+$500.00)
New Unit Bearings: New Unit Bearings (+$195.00)
$967.
I went with stock shafts because it would have been another $500 for aftermarket shafts. I can always add those later.

you could cut price off by using your unit bearings and shafts from your lp30

I still can't believe you can't find someone to regear for less than $1k.

What are they charging you for? Find out what they would charge you for labor only and not parts.

Then search JF for a carrier and gears, and get your master install kit from northridge4x4 or 4wheelparts or something for $100. You should be able to get a 3.73+ carrier for less than $80 and get some 4.56 gears for about $100-$150.

Doing the math:
Gears $150
Carrier $100 (real high...guarantee you can get one for less than that)
Install kit $100
= $350
That means they are charging you probably over $650 in labor alone...which is freaking highway robbery.

Like I said, call them and ask them the charge for LABOR ONLY. You will provide the parts. Then run your numbers again...

I'm currently wheeling on 35" tires and stock d30 shafts. Nothing is broken, and my splines aren't twisted. I do carry spares just to be safe.
