How to mount CO2 tank?

I bought a CO2 system off e-bay. I'd like to be able to mount it so I can remove it when I'm not wheeling and put it back in when I need it. The same seller can get the roll bar clamps that are made to use with the tank bracket.

Is anyone using these clamps?

Anyone have another way to mount it?

Pictures?

I bought mine from him as well...

opted for a black 15# tank (I think it's $10-$20 more)...which uses the same bracket, and is 30" tall vs 23" tall, and the same diameter...

I also got the roll bar clamps...

the 15# might not fit with a hard top, even if you rotate it to inside the roll bar...but the 10# probably will...

I mounted mine on the driver's rear bar...and rotated it to where it didn't stick out the side...the "handle" also serves to protect the regulator, and I picked up a small stuff sack at the local outdoor shop to cover the regulator...

a few pics:

Heres mine:

Big Waylon,
Wouldn't you be concerned of your placement in the event of a rollover?

That's what I was thinking too. Also, a branch could do some damage to that regulator, sack or no sack.

I probably should be...

the sack is just for protection from the elements...the tank has a protective ring/handle around the regulator that has fended off branches...

Questions:
1) Is that gauge on your tank before or after the regulator?
2) Do you use it to monitor tire pressure or tank pressure?
3) How do you determine that your tank needs refilling?

Gauge is after the regulator. It is a $10 Husky gauge from Home Depot. It regulates from 0-160 and allows me to use air tools. The regulater before it brings the PSI down to 150.

Outgoing tank pressure mostly for air tools if necessary.

When it get's real light. CO2 pretty much runs at a constant pressure until it's completely empty. Only real way to tell is to actually weigh it or simply lift it up and make an educated guess on what's left.

yep...that's about the only way...

it runs at full pressure right til it cuts off...

it's got the weight stamped into the side, so you can just weigh it...it really is as simple as weighing it empty, and after you fill a 10# tank, it ought to weigh 10 pounds heavier...

they make portable scales for you to hang the tank from, but I just fill mine up whenever I get around to it...it "should" be able to do 60 tires per fillup...(33's from 10 to 20 lbs...)

here's a pic from Stu's site that shows the weight:

you're mostly concerned with the TW (tare weight) of 14.5 lbs...what it should weigh empty...mine is actually 18.4 lbs...

Thanks for the details. I picked up a 10lb tank today, and they threw in a beverage style regulator assembly. It has two gauges, one for overall tank pressure(0-3000psi), the other for the adjustable regulator(0-160psi). I may end up getting something different, but I'll see how this setup works out first.

just an FYI...the overall tank pressure guage isn't gonna do much good...the tank will stay at max pressure right until it goes empty, as it's stored as a liquid...

the adjustable regulator will be nice, as you can fill tires at 160 (mine is a fixed 150), and then use lower pressure for air tools if needed...

just make sure the regulator assembly is capable of running CO2 at long intervals (i.e. minutes in a row, instead of short burst) without freezing up...

Overall tank pressure will be nice to have so I can monitor it on hotter days, and try to avoid burst disks.

You may want to check out this link. It's the same setup, just a few dollars cheaper.

based on Stu's site (and he did a good amount of research)...as long as you don't overfill the tank to begin with, it's not gonna be an issue...

but, it's obviously not gonna hurt anything by being there...

here's the blub from Stu's site:

A 10# CO2 tank will hold 10# of CO2 when it is properly filled. I stress the word properly because an overfilled CO2 tank, when subjected to summer time temperatures, will quickly build up enough pressure to blow out the 3000 PSI burst disc. When my burst disc blew, I contacted the company who had built my tank (for a replacement) and spoke with one of their top employees. By then, I had heard all manners of horror stories about CO2 tanks blowing up in the Phoenix summers, etc. He assured me that a properly (there is that word again) filled CO2 tank can be half buried in the Mojave desert, all summer long, without any chance of it venting. It is not until the tank is overfilled AND ambient temperature is high that the recipe for a blowout is cooked up. I found some related CO2 tank filling info on the Internet but I will admit it was too technical for me to fully grasp. It went into detail as to how the pressure spikes, based on the percent of overfill and the temperature (among other things discussed). I was able to glean enough from it that I felt comfortable with what the gas tech guy told me on the phone.

let us know how it works out!!

Greg
