how many gallons of gas does your tj hold?

I have done a VIN search of my tj and it says htat I should have a 25 gallon tank.

I usually only get between 15 to 18 gallons on a fill up and it is on "E".

What do you know about the "extra" gas tank that is an option on the TJ?

25 gal tank?? Pretty sure TJ's range from 15-19 gals with the 19 gal tank becoming standard after 99 or 00. I've never been able to put in more than 16 gals

Never heard of a factory 25 gallon tank.

Where did you perform the VIN search?

I also have never heard of a 25 gal on a TJ, either 15 or 19. My fuel low light comes on at about 14-15. I usually push it a little further, about 16 to fill up with about 275 miles on the trip odometer.

IIRC there have been threads on Pirate where people have modified the stock TJ tank and gotten it up to low 20s in capacity. Personally I've put in over 19 several times and the engine was still running.

genright has larger gas tanks you can put in, I think 25 is the largest on the tj, and 31 on the lj.

Original TJs came with either a 15 gallon tank or optional 19 gallon tank. The trick was, the tanks are actually identical; Chrysler just installed a longer breather vent tube in the "15 gallon" tank, so the pump shuts off when the tank has only 15 gallons in it. An underhanded way for Chrysler to offer an "upgrade" fuel tank option, without it costing them anything extra to produce. There are many threads around about people who dropped their "15 gallon" tank and cut the breather hose shorter to "convert" them into 19 gallon tanks. After about 2000 Chrysler dropped the entire 15 gallon nonsense and all TJs from that point on should be 19 gallon.

As for gallons per fill-up, that is also very common due to the inaccuracy of the float sensor in the tank. The low fuel light is supposed to come on with ~3 gallons left in the tank, however it is very common for it to come on much sooner. Personally, my light comes on with at least 6 gallons left. I have intentionally run my tank completely empty before to confirm this. Once the light comes on the needle will drop very quickly, so it is possible for me to get the needle pegged on "E" with at least 4 gallons left in the tank. If I fill up right around where the light comes on I never put more than 12-13 gallons in.
