How long "should" factory front brakes last

I have a mere 23k miles on the X and goodyear just called to say the front pads are 70% gone and should be replaced. 1st, I don't replace at 30% ... I wait ... and I certianly wait when they say it'l be $179 for two front pads.

BUT, isn't 23K a bit low? What's the average here and I know I am as brake heavy as I am accelerator heavy and that takes it's toll.

23k if you drive hard doesn't sound unreasonable. There are a ton of variables involved. One person might get 70,000 miles, another might only get 20,000 miles.

23k isn't so bad if you're hard on em.

Don't feel bad about the low mileage....my wife gives her brakes a similar work out.

If you didn't know any better you'd think her front wheels were the grey teflon ones.

I have almost 60,000 miles on mine. I checked them the other day and have about 10,000 left.

About the only pads I am aware of that have fairly unanimous favorable comments about helping a Jeep to brake a little better are the carbon metallic pads made by Performance Friction. Icing on the cake is that they don't squeal or product much visible brake dust.

I changed mine out around 34k. The rears were bad, the fronts still had some life left.

If you believe 23K is a bit low, I believe you already answered your own question and you realize why as well. My OEM pads lasted much longer that 23K and I'm not brake heavy.

the question is a bit confusing to me - if you have 30% left on your pads at 23k, why are you asking if 23k is a bit low? according to the math based on the numbers you provided, you are getting about 33k out of the pads. that doesnt sound unreasonable for a self-proclaimed heavy braker

Pick a different reason because that one is both lame and stupid to perpetuate.

The EBC 6000 Series pads give you a much better pedal feel, and IMHO I think they're way better than the stock OEM pads. They also have a special coating on them which breaks the pads in properly. I highly recommend the 6000 series or the 7000 series Green Stuff brake pads.

60k and still on my originals. Had 34"s on for 56k miles now and still stopping.

I'll probably replace them as soon as the 36"s arrive though.

What??? No they don't, not at all. I've been running PF brake pads for probably 120K miles now and have no additional rotor wear. MANY of my local friends run them and no one has ever noticed any additional rotor wear. As a matter of fact, the pads are a bit softer than factory which would give longer rotor wear.

Perhaps they wear out your rotors faster....but they've not worn out mine.

Granted, I did change rotors about 3 years ago but that was because of the Warn hub conversion. I inspected my front rotors about 3 months ago and they are so far from needing replacement, I couldn't even guess when I might be considering a new set.
