How does one rescue their rig
Not that I broke mine, but how does one With a broken rear c-clipped axle? You know, the tire and rim hanging off, and all that fancy jaz, get it off the trail. Just curious.

Buying an axle kit that will greatly reduce your chances of that ever happening is the easiest way.

A while back I was wheeling with a d35 guy... He broke and had no parts. We tried the whole stick holding the wheel on but did not work. Ended up creating a ski out of a log, tie-downs, and straps with the wheel and shaft removed. I pulled him to the stagging area where he was then loaded on a trailer and sent home.

I am also curious how many of the broken axles in those photos are d35s. compared to d44 or 8.8. Anyone here ever brake their front axle? (I know people have, just curious how often it happens since that is my weak link with a d30 on 35s) What a PITA it must be to do a trail fix but if you wheel hard and long enough it is going to happen sooner or later I suppose.

I carried a homemade version of this (made from water pipe and a couple of pieces of PVC). Fortunately, I never broke and now I have the 8.8 in there.

Had this happen to a buddy at the top of a trail. What we used was the bar from a high lift, and used it to hold the wheel/axle inside the axle tube.
Bar approximately horizontal to the ground, and tied each end in front/behind the wheel. Was good enough to get off the trail so you can grab the tow truck. |

Just carry spare axle shafts. Just pop the old one out, slide a new one in... keep wheeling.
Spare shafts are plentiful and cheap. |
