How do I remove my TJ's Shifter Knob?

Ok, I must fess up here! I want to put a gimmickly stainless steel skull shifter knob on my 2002 TJ. I cant seem to figure out how to get my factory knob off though... has anyone done this before? How to I get that sucka off?

If it is a stick shift you need to pop the shift position chart piece off the knob with a small flathead screw driver. Then you can see the bolt that needs to come off.

Pop the legend off with a small screwdriver, remove 15mm nut, unscrew.

Got it, thanks... so if I replace this shifter knob would I need another that uses that 15mm nut or can I just use any that thread onto the rod?

Anything that threads onto the rod or something with a plastic sleeve and tightening screws. koolknobs.com has some sweet stuff cheap.

i would think you can't just use any old thread, you pretty much are limited to the 15mm. I took mine off without popping off the center diagram. I just twisted the thing off, and it came off pretty easy. Its really easy to make a shift knob out of anything. My uncle helped me make a pool ball into one for my jeep. Just drill a hole, thread it with a tap and bam you're done.

my TJ shift knob just unscrews. I want to get an 8-ball shift knob at some point

Just put on a custom knob myself. If you take a very thin flathead screwdriver you can pop off the gear shifter cap by placing it between the "1" and "2" side of the cap. There is a small gap where the screw driver head can fit under to pop it up. Also, for my 2005 TJ the nut under the cap is 15mm but the shifter thread itself is a 3/8" x 16 course thread. Weird that they mixed metric with standard on the same piece of harware.

The shifter thread is M10 X 1.5, pretty close to 3/8 X 16.

Wow, you are right they are very close. I would go with the metric then, M10 x 1.5.

Yup. M10 x 1.5 is correct. For a pool ball shifter, just drill a hole and epoxy the nut from the stock knob in there.

Epoxy the old nut into it! that is GENIUS. Haha, i'm about to do a grenade and the hold in the bottom was too big.... couldn't figure out how to tap it lol. WOW i feel dumb. Thanks for the tip!
