How do I get to the flasher relay?

Put in some LED tail lights and figured I would pick up a EP-26 flasher. So here I am LEDS are in but I cant for love of all that's holy gain access to the flasher, which is apparently on the top of the steering column. The sides of the upper steering column cover come loose but the part that is behind the steering wheel does not budge. is there a screw that I need to loosen ? a technique (pull up then back- wait I tried that)

How do I get to it?

Position yourself head-down in the footwell and start it clicking, you'll be able to spot it once you locate its clicking. I've replaced mine without removing anything.

On 2003+ TJs (it could be 2001+, not sure on the exact change over date), the flasher relay is actually on top of the steering column. You are going to have to remove the two phillips screws on the bottom, and then the steering column snaps apart. The prongs actually face towards you, so you are going to have to pull it out towards the windshield. It is on the right side, on top of the steering column.

Thanks - that was the problem - 2 screws ! By the way if anyone does the LED tail light conversion the flasher is EP-26 and make sure that it says "LED" on the relay. It is a 4 prong that replaces the factory 5 prong. Not sure why the replacement is only 4 prong but every works flashers and hazards. I'll post some pics

Indeed, that is what I have. Just be aware it will still work when the key is removed.

By the way, the EP-26 flasher is NOT a replacement unit for your year TJ, which is why it is a 4 pin unit vs. a 5 pin unit. The EP-26 is for early model TJs.

I am not aware of a drop-in replacement flasher for the newer TJs.

Users either modify their existing flasher or go with the fast flashing rate.

Details on modifying your own are at:

I have an '04 TJ and use the EP26 flasher relay that says LED on it with no problems.

So they will know what I am talking about if I say "give me a EP-26 flasher relay" or is it out on the main floor somewhere with the fuses and stuff.
