How Can I Make Gas Pedal & Throttle Smoother?

I was teaching my 15 year old son how to drive in the Jeep. I noticed that when he stepped on the gas, he could not do it smoothly. But, in our other cars he does fine. The other cars are drive-by-wire. I know the Jeep will never be as smooth, but take me from the gas pedal to the throttle body--what can I do to make the system smoother?

My auto was real sensitive and would take off quick when first taking off.Putting some 35's on it fixed that problem.

Maybe try a little tighter return spring on the TB?

I doubt that it is smoothness as much as sensitivity. Put a heavier return spring from the TB arm to the bracket coming off the valve cover. I had to do this for my 15 y.o. daughter. I got tired of her punching it up to 3,000 rpm before letting out the clutch. My neck still hurts!

LOL! I taught my daughter to drive in my Jeep with a clutch. I know what you mean. She finally got it and now at 18 can drive a stick as smooth as silk.

i used the below information for my 05 rubicon. this information is taken from tmar.net there are pic's there under throttle spring. the p/n is valid. i did the mod. on mine and did notice an improvement in throttle control at low speed over rough ground. i did not have to drill the hole that is suggested because it was already there

Throttle Return Spring Installation

2006 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4.0L, 6-Cyl. Engine

It seems that 2005 & 2006 Wranglers do not come with the above throttle spring. This makes the throttle very sensitive and hard to control over bumps at low speeds.

I purchased a spring for a 2004 Wrangler, part # 52078102-AB from my Jeep dealer. $4.85 list price. I got it for $3.64. Such a deal! Heh, heh.

I drilled a small hole in the existing bracket for the hooked side of the spring, and used a 6-32 thread size bolt and 3 nuts for the throttle linkage side of the spring. The head of the bolt fits into the plastic slot on one end of the spring. I then ran a nut up to the plastic, but just barely finger tight, so that the plastic can pivot as the throttle linkage changes positions. I then double nutted the assembly onto the throttle linkage and cut off the excess bolt.

The throttle has a "normal" feel to it now, and is much less sensitive than before.

I just picked up a spring at my local hardware store. They had a variety pack for about $5.00. It doesn't have to be very long, maybe two or three inches max. I did something similar to mmj48, but used a small threaded eye bolt with two nuts on it - hooked one spring end to the TB and then the other end to the eye bolt. That allowed me to adjust the tension some. I did have to drill a hole for it. You might have to play around with different springs until you get the tension right.

Increase the length of the throttle lever arm. This will reduce the rate of throttle opening vs pedal travel. In doing so you may loose WOT, but...
