how can i find the color code for my tj? are these steps to scratch repair correct?

ive got several scratches i wanted to repair, i figured mopar would carry the exact same color, its a 97 tj sport, is spray or touch up bottel better ,heres a pic

also, i wouldnt need primer because theyre not deep , would these steps be correct

1) sand w/ 400 grit paper
2) put the paint on
3)put clear coat after paint dries
4) re-sand w/ wet/dry paper ( i dont know what wet/dry paper is, isnt sanding gonna scratch off the paint i just put on)
5) put polishing compound on

Unless you're doing an entire panel, sanding and spraying will not look very good with a regular aerosol can. You can however get very good results with an airbrush, if you have one. I would not bring out the sand paper unless I were using an airbrush or repainting an entire panel.

I wouldn't worry about a few scratches either. I've got plenty and have just come to accept them as the price of riding on trails. I just use touch up paint to cover them up a bit.

If the scratches are just to the primer, paint and clearcoat is enough. If they're down the the metal, you'll need to prime first.

Wet sanding is done with finer and finer grades. Start with 400 and progress to 2000. After that, you use a rubbing compound and polish. It should look like glass if done correctly.

with touch up paint you probably won't need clearcoat. I am an autobody repairman so I am quite familiar with fixing paint. BE CAREFUL when sanding. If you sand through your factory clearcoat you are screwed and the whole panel will need refinishing. Where it says to put polishing compound on this will likely need to be done with a machine polisher. I recommend taking it somewhere for this as there are many different compounds and buffing wheels and if you burn through the clearcoat the panel will need refinishing. I would use a toothpick to fill the scratch with paint. And make sure you clean off the area with some final clean or alcohol before you start. Your initial sanding should be very light over the scratch to soften it, the second time you sand it will be to even out the paint. Make sure you wetsand. BEFORE YOU START the general rule is that if you can't feel the scratch with your fingernail then it can probably be buffed out. If you have any more questions you can pm me.

Some time ago someone turned me on to this stuff:

http://www.langka.com/

If you have a scratch, even if it is to the metal, use the regular touch-up paint from Mopar and then use Langka as directed.

It is amazing stuff, it dissolves the touch-up paint and then you rub it with a piece of fabric tightly held against a flat piece of plastic. The fabric picks up the "melted" paint and leaves the paint in the scratch, effectively filling it in. The paint then dries to a perfect match.

I fixed a nasty scratch and a pair of deep stone chips on my Grand Cherokee with it and then did some stone chips on the front of my 'vette. (Believe me if it matches the bright red paint on a 15 year old car and can't be seen, it works on anything. Later I did my friend's car where someone had "keyed" it for about 3 feet on a side panel. You cannot see any of the repairs.

To find your DC paint code, look on your A pillar, next to your windshield with the door open. Mine is Emerald Green Pearl and is code PGF.

Keep moving forward. But keep an eye on history, for if you don't, you are doomed to repeat it.

I would not use 400 grit, however I can't see your scratches to see how bad they are. All sanding should be *wet* sanding. Apply touch up paint, wet sand to level paint, you will need a rotary polisher or a good dual action polisher to buff out the haze left behind from wet sanding. As eagleno49 said, be careful with your clear coat, don't go through it or that spot will not match the rest of the paint. If you are not experienced in this type of thing ask plenty of questions, as it can be a tricky thing to learn.

Enter your VIN, and you'll get the factory paint... you can go for the touch-up size or the rattle cans

^------ what he said. It's right inside your driver-side door next to the edge of your dash.

Depending on the depth of the scratch, you can color(wet)sand it out. Get some 1500-2000 grit sandpaper and some water and lightly sand the scratch. Then buff with some extra cut rubbing compound and polish. just don't break thru on the paint or you'll have to spot it in.
