Horrible mpg in a new-to-me Jeep
About a month ago I bought a 2004 Jeep Rubicon and I've been dying to know what kind of mileage it's getting. After filling it up twice I've gotten my result. 11 mpg
I had a 2008 Rubicon before this and it was getting 12 mpg with automatic trans, 35" tires and stock gearing in it. I'm wondering if 11mpg is right for a 2004 Rubicon with a 4.11 ratio, 31" tires, 4.0L I6 engine, D44 front and rear. I drive it like I'm trying to save gas too, not gunning it everywhere etc...
I'm going to do a few things to it to hopefully bring my mpg up a bit like STP engine cleaner, CAI, programmer etc.
My question is, am I getting the correct mpg for what I've got? What can I do to possibly bring up my mpg's?

you should be getting closer to 15 in my opinion. I have a 2003 Rubicon with 4.88s and 35s and i get 14 MPG. my friends 2004 rubicon with the stock 4.10s on 33s gets 16-17 MPG.
I put an airaid intake and a magnaflow exhaust on my jeep and that definately helped.

That's what I was thinking. I was hoping for at least 14 mpg. I didn't even get 200 miles out of a full tank without the light coming on.

Sound a little low to me. One thing I have noticed is that if I really baby my Jeep, I get worse mileage than if I drive it normally. Also, with the auto, I have to keep the overdrive off unless I'm going over 50 MPH or going down hill. Otherwise it shifts into overdrive and really lugs the engine which is not optimal.

I get about 16, but that was on 4:10s and 31"s with the 2.5, everytime I complain about it the wife says I should have looked in to lifting a metro or buying a samurai, Jeeps get crappy milage, she tells me as soon as its lifted and you put bigger tires on it, it becomes a toy more than transportation, now I have 33"s and 4:88s and I dont look at the milage lol

Check engine light is on and I had it diagnosed yesterday, it's my o2 sensor. So I'm going to have the replaced either today or tomorrow.

OK, stupid question time. How do you check the cats and O2 sensors? I have an 05 Rubi, 4:10, 6 speed, 33s, a fair amount of extra weight from bumpers, winch and such. I realize that with 33s and having not swapped out the speedo gear, I know I am not getting true miles on the odometer, but this Rubi has never (in the year ive had it) gotten 14-15 mpg. More like 10 for me. And I dont have any check engine lights on.

You should, in no way, take any of this personally. It's just business. So to recap, I come in peace, I mean you no harm, and you all will die. Gallaxhar out.

I just got an '06 Unlimited and I'm also getting 10mpg. I only have 28,000 miles on it. Maybe I should check my o2 sensors as well.

I get 15 mpg when I have my 31 inch Duratrac tires on and 17 with the stock 30 inch GS-A tires. If I got 10 mpg I would sell it and buy a Samurai!

I get 13. Hilariously it's about the same in town and highway. Sport w/ optional d44. Not sure of the gearing but I think PO said 3.73. Tires are metric equivalent to 30 or 31. I have codes for both minicats.

I'm in the same boat. 2004 Rubicon auto with 31's and 4.10 gears. I'm getting 10-11 mpg as well. I bought it back in January with 48k on it, I now have 50.5K. Changed the plugs a little while back and it didn't seem to help much at all. No check engine light is on, but I'm leaning to swapping out the front two O2 sensors and see if that doesn't help a little bit. Aside from the O2 sensors, I'm at a loss as to why the mileage is so bad.
It's breaking my wallet, I know that much! I'll be following the thread to see if any suggestions come up as to what to look at for improvements. I'm in the camp that believes CAI's and bigger exhausts to not help, so I'm not willing to even try those.

I get anywhere from 13mpg to 17 mpg. It all depends on how I drive it. '03, 4.0L, 31's on 3.55 gears, 5 speed
