Home Made Gas Tank Lift

I just got a free stock gas tank skid plate from a guy that put on a KILBY skid plate.

I'm planning on replacing my beat up original with the newer stock one.

1. Has anybody modified the stock original skid plate to lift the tank?

2. How much did you lift it?

3. Got any pics?

I just did a thread on this not too long ago. I wanted to do the same thing but the next trip I really did a number on mine. Now I don't know what I want to do. I would still like to lift mine just need to get another one first.

http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/raising-gas-tank-after-body-lift-431495/

My plan was to take the stock skid and cut off all the mounting points. Then measure down your body lift size and bend out there. Drill new holes using the pieces you cut off for a template and lengthen the strap. While you have it off I would take the time to add some more beef to the bottom of it.

That would be the safe and quick way.

To get the maxium gain... Unbolt your tank and skid so the weight is off the jeep. Measure the height from the ground to tank. Jack up your tank till its as high as it will go. Remeasure, do some subtraction you get X. The difference "X" is how much you can raise your tank. Take stock skid cut off tabs. Measure down "X" bend and use cut off pieces as a hole template. Lengthen strap and jack that baby back up. Little more work but you might get another 1" out of it.

Should have searched for "Raising Gas Tank after Body Lift" DUH.. just messing with ya. Link is in my first post. Which I just edited like 25 times

EDIT: I think since you have an older TJ the Kilby skid will raise your tank 1" with out a body lift. So with your body lift you can probably jack yours up 2" by modifying your skid like the second suggestion I put in my first post on edit #17. The skids were beefed up around 03 I think so if you have an 03 or newer skid your better off.

I really should take more time before I hit submit.

The current plan of attack is to use a cut off wheel on my grinder and cut off all of
mounting brackets, bolt them on the jeep and put the gas tank back in the skid
plate and use a jack to lift it up as high as I can. Mark it with a sharpie where it
overlaps. Then take it down and weld it up.

The new skid plate is from a '05 it looks a lot beefier than my '97 skid plate.

The problem is the rear tank eventually will hit the cross member that is right there.

I don't know how much fab work you want to do, but you could maybe raise that rear cross member and remove the body lift pucks. The shocks are also mounted on this cross member so you might be able to run a slightly longer shock and gain some travel.

Sounds like a good plan. When you do that take lots of pictures and do a write up so I can copy you.

HUMM interesting. On my LJ it looked like I could clear that cross member. However I have more room back there. This is a good point I forgot about for the SWB TJs.

The 2002 plus skidplates are for like a 19g tank where as the 02's and earlier are much smaller how are you going to accomodate for that?

I noticed the '05 skid plate looks different than my current '97 skid plate,
I have not put my tank in it to see if will work yet, I know the mounting holes
are the same so it will bolt up to my TJ.

That is why I am asking questions here first.

I did not know they changed the capacity of the gas tanks n '02, Maybe I should
look into the 02 and up gas tank four more gallons would be nice. At 12 mpg
anything would help.

I looked online at www.napaonline.com, They show a 15 gallon tank and a 19
gallon tank for all TJ's from 97 - 06.

The smaller 15 gallon tanks have the same external dimensions as the 19 gallon tanks. The only difference is there is a longer filler tube on the 15 gallon tank that prevents you from filling it all the way up.

I think it was mostly (maybe only?) 4 cyl TJs that got the 15 gal tank. It was 99 when the 19 gal tank became standard for all TJs.

I'm not sure about the 97-05 differences though. You might have some issues there, but I don't think it will be anything major.

I found a web site that says the change to a stock 19 gallons was in 1999.

I've gotten as much as 16 gallons into mine... I just thought I was getting ripped off by the pump.. or that I was running on fumes.... HUMMM!!!
