HID Conversion advice.....

Hey guys, new to the board and to Jeeps, I just got my first one a couple nights ago....anyway, I have been searching this board for the last 2 days looking for info on HID headlights as the stock headlights suck. I see tons of h4 conversion info but not much about HIDs.... What I DON'T understand is.....why can't I buy just a universal Bi-xenon HID kit(for high and low beam), then buy the IPF lense housings and put it all together? What is the problem with doing this with Jeeps? seems like most are sticking to the H4 fatboy bulbs but.... it wouldn't cost much at all to do it the way I am thinking so I must be missing something?

I have installed at least 4-5 Universal style HID kits in different cars and never had a problem so I am not sure what the hang up is on doing it with a Jeep.

Your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Thats a common question around here, even i've asked it. The answer is that the IPF housings don't have the proper cut offs for the light which will blind oncoming traffic. A few guy have done just that, and say they've never been flashed or pulled over for it, so it's a matter of personal preference. I have the replacement housings with just normal bulbs, but as soon as i can afford the kit, it's going in. I say go for it!

Yeah I am gonna go for it....if I am gonna go through the trouble of swapping housings/bulbs, I want a huge difference in brightness. I have a company I have been buying HID kits from for real cheap, I am sure they are chinese but I have had great luck with them, actually never had a problem and I have installed 4 on cars and even 1 on my turbo hayabusa. I can get the Bi-xenon kit for both lights for $69.99+shipping... then $65 for the IPF housings......basically $140 I can have HIDs..... I thought for sure more members here would have done something like this but I have searched this forum for 2 days and it seems most go with the IPF housings and Fatboy bulbs, but then have to add relays/thicker wire etc...... I was just wondering if I was missing out on something by installing HIDs.

Be very careful with the wife mod. Uninstallation can be extremely expensive. Wife mods have been known to take the Jeep and all other mods during the uninstall process. Also, make sure you service your wife mod properly as often as humanly possible. Wife mods not properly serviced may malfuction or uninstall themselves at any time.

A write-up of mine that turned into a huge debate:
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/h4-hids-installed-626558/

Conclusion: if you customize the bulb shields and headlights to your application, you can keep the glare to a minimum. I'm running a Chinese PNP kit and have been for a while, and haven't been flashed. But I welded an extension to the bulb shroud out of a soda can to keep the glare down. Mine's Bi-Xenon H4 bulbs 4300K with Cibie headlights.

I will eventually be doing a complete retrofit with Acura projectors (TL I think). Just do it right the first time I'd say. HIDPlanet.com has a great forum ... read some there.

As for kits, I'm going to be using DDMTuning.com for my next kit purchase. Seem legit, and have great customer service for me so far.

Ofcourse....

Here is who I have been buying them from, at least 3 of the sets I installed anyway...No problems, not a one.....

This is the kit I am contemplating for the Jeep:
http://vvme.com/product/detail-20022.html

If the only downside to running HIDs in a IPF lense/housing is "glare" to other drivers, then I will take my chances with it....as long as its not something that causes some kind of freak harm thats only known to Jeep Wranglers, I will call it good...

I am blind as a bat at night so I need SERIOUS light thrown out....and not just in my lane, I need the periferal lighting also..

For $150, I will be the crash test dummy....

I might do this. Let me know how yours goes. Are you using the IPF E-code housing or the DOT one?

HID's were my first mod when I got my jeep a couple weeks ago! Once you have them on any vehicle...you will never want to drive a vehicle with regular halogen bulbs again. Mine are in aftermarket H4 housings.

Exactly.....

I first put them on my Hayabusa and after that, I was screwed for using anything else.... I emailed the people at the link I posted asking them some questions about the kits for a Wrangler and see what they say.....Odds are, I am going to order them anyway and order some IPF lenses....

I gotta get this thing to where I can see at night...

JeepnT99, I just read your whole 6 pg thread, I will be doing about the same thing you did except for the little deflector thingy.... I will adjust the lights to the best of my ability but honestly, all I care about is being able to see....I could care less about glare that others may see.

Is glare really much of an issue with the E-code housings? I'd think it would be more of an issue with the DOT housings.

I got HIDs for mine with halogen low beams and xenon Hi beams, Keeps thieves from knowing what you have, and you can turn them on when needed. Ive had 2 sets stolen, but than again the price on them has really dropped so they prob arnt as much of a target anymore.
