I'd say if you really wanna remove it, I'd find a spot where it would fit and extend all the lines and wires. that way it is out of the way and still functioning.

Also, not sure about where you live, but I know here it's illegal to remove/disable the ABS system on a vehicle that came with it.

EDIT: Just read your post above. If your just removing it to make room for the mod, then reinstalling it, Then I don't see a problem in doing so. Most likely you will have to rebleed the ABS system, which is something different then bleeding the brakes.

EDIT #2: I just looked on All-Data and it says that you have to have a scan tool to bleed the brakes with abs.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - BLEEDING ABS BRAKE SYSTEM
ABS system bleeding requires conventional bleeding methods plus use of the DRB scan tool. The procedure involves performing a base brake bleeding, followed by use of the scan tool to cycle and bleed the HCU pump and solenoids. A second base brake bleeding procedure is then required to remove any air remaining in the system.

  1. Perform base brake bleeding.
  2. Connect scan tool to the Data Link Connector.
  3. Select ANTILOCK BRAKES, followed by MISCELLANEOUS, then ABS BRAKES. Follow the instructions displayed. When scan tool displays TEST COMPLETE, disconnect scan tool and proceed.
  4. Perform base brake bleeding a second time.
  5. Top off master cylinder fluid level and verify proper brake operation before moving vehicle.

i hate to have to say this...but if you absolutly need to disconnect those and pull them out, you should have your rig dragged to a brake shop to set your ABS back up. it's just too vital a system to not be done properly. i'm not mechanically retarded, but i am in no way confident enough to do anything except extended brake lines/standard maintenance in my drive way on my only real stop capability..

If you remove the ABS unit you are opening up a can of radio active worms if your not completely sure of what your doing.
ABS brakes are a royal pain in the booty.
There are many vavles, chambers, and selenoinds in that little thing that if you dont bleed the brakes right, your jeep will never stop correctly. And then you'll just have to bring it to a shop so they can do it with a vacuum pump. It's a pricey repair.

Do everything you can to work around it. Not on it.

It required a bit more cutting but I think I have actually found a way to keep both of those items exactly where they were, even during the mod process. Thanks for all the help after the slow start.

Pics will come if I get it done tonight. If not they will come as soon as it's done.

It will be a crazy trip and I will make sure to ask some one to hold my beer first. Geez where were you with all this helpful advice when I tried to drive down the freeway at 70mph with no rear shocks and no bolts connecting my hardtop?

I just shot milk outta my nose. I'm keeping that one.

I worked around the two brake parts and lifted the fender on the driverside. The brake system stayed exactly where it was (which won't be a problem cause I am stretching the front axle forward a couple inches and that will provide even more room.
Here is a close up of the part sticking through.

Here is a shot from the side to show what it looks like sticking out. It will be covered with some sort of shield.

Yeah, I was gonna say, regardless of the fact that messing with ABS is annoying, where was the need to move it? And even if you needed to move it, couldn't you just have moved it out of the way without disconnecting anything? I did that with the ABS on my Mustang back when I had to do an engine swap--worked fine. Zippie ties rock.

The amount of work you're putting into this is amazing, it's like watching my dogs try to get a treat out of a clear plastic container.

Not to worry. ABS is far less complicated than rebuilding an electronic automatic transmission... We've all done that, right? Right? Anyone?????? Hello, is this thing on?????

I really don't know what that meant. It is alot more work than a simple flat fender but I think it should be worth it.

Glad to see you got that fender move taken care of. I'm interested to see what the finished product looks like

When I swapped axles I just left the ABS piece alone and bled the brakes like normal after I installed the axles and the new ZJ proportioning valve. It has been working fine for more than 2 years now. Unhooking the brakes and reinstalling isn't rocket science?
