Help Removing TC Shifter Grip

Hopefully someone has done this and can help, I have done a leather shift boot and carved an Oak shift knob, pictures below. I would like to carve and oak handle for the transfer case shifter as well.

How do I get the rubber grip off? Does it have to be cut off and if so how long is the metal shaft once done?

If anyone has remove the grip from the transfercase shifter a picture of it with nothing on it would be a great help.

Thanks,

Jeff

Looks good. I never pulled the grip from mine. Are you interested in reusing the T-case grip? If not just cut it off and be done with it.

Thanks for the click free.

Not planning on reusing the grip, but I wanted some Idea of what I have to work with under it before I started cutting.

I bet the grip is glued on. Either the steel goes close to the end or there is a plastic sleeve in there as that grip is pretty solid on mine. I guess you will need to cut it off. You could call the dealer and see if the have a replacement grip. I bet the grip and shift lever are all one piece.

PM Bluesman or Chili Palmer. I know they both put different handles on theirs. They should be able to answer your question.

Get a thin cutting wheel on an air grinder and go to town.

Funny, I immediately thought Jaguar too even before seeing you said the same thing. Mighty fancy if you ask me.

Thank you for the compliments, didn't think Jag when I did it it just sort of happened as I went along....

When I bought the jeep, the rubber boot was pulled up and the bezel was missing, in researching here I discovered it was most likely done to help with the shifting into 2nd in the cold. Decided to make a leather boot and got a good deal on brown leather which I liked better with the tan interior anyways.

Still wasn't pleased with the feel of the stock shifter so I put a B&M short shifter in, it was much more precise but with the stock jeep knob it was to short. All the aftermarket knobs locally were too "ricer" but I had an extra piece of oak from doing my stair railing so I decided to try carving one - 4 hours later with chisels, dremel etc. thats what I came up with.

Now I want the Transfer shifter to match. Guess I need driving gloves and hat if its now the Jag Jeep

Pictures with Grip cut off

Thought I'd update with pictures, cut the grip off with 1 slice along the top with a utility knife (pried out the shift pattern insert first.

Pictures of the bare shaft:

How do you plan on attaching the new handle? I think you could thread the lever.

Thanks for the click free,

I am unsure as of yet how I am going to attache the new handle, I haven't even started to carve it yet . If it had been round stock all the way out I was going to thread it and just screw the handle on. with the long flat section (which I don't want to cut off) I may still thead it or I may drill 2 holes in it and put screws through from the side. Still sorting that out.
