HELP - Removing Stock Steering Stabilizer
Having trouble removing the stock steering stabilizer from the tie rod...not the end by the tire, but the one half way up the rod. The new one looks conic, like a press-fit, that gets tighter as you tighten it. Is the stock the same, and do I need to bang the hell out of or does it unscrew?
Thanks!

Be careful not to bend the drag link if you are banging it with a BFH.

tubework is cool...
|
hit the drag link where the bolt goes through...usually a good couple whacks and it'll pop out...

You could rent a pitman arm puller from autozone, that's what I did when I replaced my SS. BFH helps too though.

I had my mechanic change mine out and he didn't want to use a hammer on my "new" jeep (only had it about a month.)
He used a puller thing, sorry don't know the real name, on which he used an air wrench to make it "snap" free. I had two arms that came around and grabbed the stationary piece and a heavy duty bolt that pushed on the tapered piece to force it out. I'm glad I didn't try to do it myself. If I had , I would still be working on it and I had it done in January! Good luck, Randy |

Well, I just changed mine out today....After seeing my brother screw around with his a few weeks ago, I hit mine twice with a BFH today, then just decided to get the torch out and heat the area around it a little bit....Sure enough, first hit after being heated it popped right out.... |

Use a Pitman Arm Puller. It saves time, effort, and steering parts. LOL
