That cannot happen, by definition. But if you are having this error, a common cause is a misfire. Misfire codes can disappear after some time without a misfire. The light should go off in turn though. If they cant clear it with the scanner, i would try a "hard clear" by disconnecting power for a while. Good luck.

Possibly a bad connection to the OBDII port or no power to it. Power is from the same fuse that supplies the courtesy lamps so if they are OK the connector should have power. Did you know that on a 97 you can get two digit codes from the cluster...?

Online factory service manuals and parts lists - http://www.jeep4x4center.com/knowledge-base/index.htm
If it doesn't work properly, look for the service manual link at the bottom of the page.

I edited your thread title.

"Help" is a little vague.

Gas cap tight? Can't recall if there's a code when the gas cap is too loose.

Thats all I could think of, finally got the TJ running perfectly so if there is no code is nothing wrong, or is there no code because there is nothing wrong except a bad connection, or ...? driving me nuts...
I should be working on my CJ7 resto.

Unplug battery terminal cables and touch them together for 5+ minutes... Reconnect and see if light goes away.

It could be a failed OBDII monitor "readiness"...I'm not sure these leave a code, but a good code scanner will have a mode to check OBDII monitor status and it will tell you which ones have failed.

It does leave a code but this can't be it. In order for the gas cap to throw the code it takes a while and his light has been coming right back on after having been reset.
