Never did get the heater box out, but ended up flushing the core and all is well. Thanks for the help guys.

Wow another reason to keep my YJ, just did the one in that last weekend..

Take the battery tray out, 2 hoses, 4 nuts and it falls on the floor. Just disconnect the 3 cables.

Sorry for bringing this back to life but, my heater core is leaking. Do you have to completely pull the A/C / heater box completely out of the vehicle? or can you just replace the heater core while the box is in the vehicle?

I am asking this because I don't want to disconnect the A/C lines.

You will have to evacuate your a/c and disconnect the lines... along with all the steps listed above. The evaporator core has to be completely removed from the vehicle, and the a/c evaporator is inside the core.

this brings back horrible memories, i had no instructions when i did mine- i just knew the heater/ac core was somewhere in a box behind the dash

I did this about 6 months ago and I wrote up my own instructions. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any at the time either. Stu Offroad was gracious enough to post my instructions. I've attached the link:
