Ouch, I've done that one before and its definitely not fun. I did it with out a write-up too...

somehow I only ended up with a few left over screws when I was done

Figure out why it is going bad within such a short amount of time...something isn't right somewhere.

He may need to try some better coolant (Mercedes) or a better quality heater core, depending on which kind failed. no?
